Healing each other to get more med kits; please tell me it's a myth.
I have seen too many people who sternly believe that you get more health kits by healing each other and I'm pretty sure it's not true. Someone please confirm this.

Its considered friendly to do and can tactically be better at times, but yes, its a myth. Using health kits period can cause more kits to appear. To be more specific, when a map begins, the director spawns all items, including pills and shots. If a team is doing especially poorly and takes a lot of damage and uses a lot of kits, then the director can change a pills/shots into a kit. It will not spawn a med kit at an empty location.

This is confirmed by the game's cvars and also through years of direct observation.

That's what I thought. I personally think it's more tactically sound to, whenever possible, heal yourself so that you have more people to cover you. When people tell me not to do that because of some non-existent game mechanic, I just get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off. The guy I was playing with just a few minutes ago even said it's confirmed on the official site...WHAT?!

From the wiki:

In Versus mode, if the players heal each other, the Director will spawn more health kits within the map. Keep in mind if you are the first team to play as the Survivors, whatever health kits you caused the Director to spawn will also be available to the other team when it's their turn. This could be a hazard as the Infected team could use it to their advantage for when they become the Survivors and learn the locations of the spawned health kits when dead or as a ghost in spawn mode.

I primarily play Campaigns and when I play Versus, it is usually on a config with no health kits so I can't confirm or deny that claim.

I'm pretty sure it's magic or something. There's no evidence of it in any of the game files or cvars, yet I find consistently more health kits when healing allies as opposed to when I don't. I've even run "lab" games in single player specifically to test it; stages consistently spawn 3-5 more kits when I heal allies than when I don't, and are also more likely to spawn multiple kits next to each other.

It's especially noticeable during finales. I had a No Mercy finale round once where I healed all three teammates immediately after a tank attack, and the director responded by spawning two health kits, side by side, in the open area directly in front of the central building with the radio in it. The only time I have ever seen items spawn there are when the director drops health kits there, and it's always immediately after I healed multiple teammates.

Is there any remotely verifiable reason for this? Nope. Do I do it anyway because it clearly works despite that? Yep. I'm content with it being magic so long as it's consistent.

I think the myth is when you do the right thing (such as healing your teammate, passing items, etc) the AI director will reward you. I have not seen this confirmed except the reply by Ninjabutter, which I do have my doubt.
What I have seen is that the director will change the pills to med kits if the survivors are in bad shape. Once in Hard Rain, I saw two pills in one room and a horde and SI were attacking, so I ran out. We were hurt pretty bad and when I went to get the pills, one of them became a first aid kit.

This is so true!

If you heal a teammate and you healt is low, the bots can find more medkits for you.
