Are the survivors friends?
I can't really tell that much, but do you think they all actually get along and are friends?

Not while there's money to be made off the Left 4 Dead franchise...

By necessity, not by choice. They are strangers forced to rely on one another in order to survive. Did you happen to eat a lot of lead-based paint chips when you were a toddler?

They weren't friends before.

Play Dead Center, you will understand if you listen to the dialogue between the survivor's

one campaign has Louis and Bill talking about how Bill hates islands, its funny and all, seems like a bit of a friend conversation to me.
I would imagine some of them, or maybe all, could be friends if it wasnt for the apocolypse and all.

first game, they were more of a family.

second game, takes them time to be friends, starts off with just a desire to survive.

they would have to continue the story in a 3rd game to explain if they got any closer.

Considering how minimal the "story" of Left 4 Dead is on details or even plot, I don't think Valve really thought much into the depth on the relationships between these characters, they just gave them a bit of dialogue here and there to prevent them from being completely dull and boring, not much thought was put into it beyond that.

L4D is (mostly) just, as others have said; "Here's your gun, here's your zombies, go kill some stuff.", story in L4D (like most zombie games) is not even a partial focus of the game.

Heck, we don't even know how this "flu" came into the game's universe, because they didn't even go as far as to put that much into the story.

You take what you can get when everyone else is a zombie. Someone that shoots at the monsters and doesn't try to kill me=friend.

Maybe you are talking about L4D1, but I think the dialogues are very well written in L4D2. You can tell from their talks that they started as strangers and later on they became friends. And each person has its very obvious personality. I particularly like Ellis teasing Rochelle and the biker dud,e and Nike teasong Ellis and Zoey in the Passing.

Or even Rochelle "I take back all the things I said about your crappy band"(Dark Carnival Finale Safe Room) to Ellis and Coach.

By the end of their 3rd campaign(originally their 2nd) they are close enough to be able to joke around together like that. Couldn't have been more than a few days.

They should all start a band called (The Zambie Squad)
