What display driver are you currently running?

I've seen in some post that there are people with problems in Mint 16 and someone said he/she kept Mint 15 just for steam games.

The issue here is that libtxc isn't loaded, so the textures aren't loading properly. Do the following:

sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

that's work with half life game to.

I've had trouble running Steam games with integrated graphics cards before [Crunchbang (wheezy)]; from what I've read, sometimes Linux has trouble getting drivers for integrated graphics cards. If you click on 'Steam' in the upper left corner of the Steam client, you can choose 'check for graphics updates' and try to download the latest drivers; you could also try going to the support website of your laptop manufacter to see if they offer driver downloads for Linux (HP does afaik).

Good luck! You might have to resort to using Windows to game on, but you can get Windows 8 Enterprise for a trial download and then just never buy it after the 90 days are up.
