Valve screwed up mutations, once upon a time...
I miss the days when it was one mutation a week, where players from all over would gather around ONE game mode, but Valve messed up when they took that away...

It might *seem* cool to have all the mutations at your disposal, but so does everyone else. This spreads everyone far too thin and makes every game mode unplayable due to a lack of people actively playing them. I miss playing 'Taaannnk!' with other people, it was one of my favorite mutations! I'd rather only get to play it for a week once in a while with a bunch of people rather than attempt to play it with no one. I used to like the mutations, but because of how it had been structured. Valve completely ruined that with one swoop. I love Valve and may even one day want to work with them, but I can't ignore their bigger mistakes.

I beg of you, Valve-- return mutations to a weekly thing. It was good back then, it was cool back then, and it actually worked back then. This doesn't work, and I thought you would have noticed that after so long...

Makes me so frustrated, I might start a steam group to rally on particular mutations... unless there's already a group like that-- anyone know of one?

Im guessing this is more of a player problem than a Valve problem, but I see your point.

It's a player problem caused by Valve. I don't even think they knew what it would do, they just did it and I personally think it did have negative consequences.

i missed when the taaaank! mutation was popular.

It didn't affect me much since I used the console commands to play whatever I wanted anyway.

You have a point but I wouldn't be surprised if Valve changed it just to simplify things on their end. Either way I doubt they'd change it back.

Yeah, i wouldn't want them to remove it, but the only way to play mutations now is with friends or in singleplayer since there just aren't too many people playing them, and they're spread out too thin.

Maybe they could have a master server list that displayed all mutation type servers, no matter if they were different or on different maps? So you could see every game being played on one screen and find games that other players are playing easily.

Another way could just be to feature the mutations each week, and have one mutation randomly featured each time you logged on. But keep all of the other mutations open to players who wanted to play them at any other time.

Valve had a good idea making every gamemode available, the problem was the execution. You are 100% correct when you said the player base is spread to thin now. The fact is, it's to cumbersome to check each and every mutation for different lobbies. What they should've done is make one big browser page of Mutations, so you'd see Taaaaank, Follow the Liter and any other active lobbies/games on the same page. The only time you should ever have to pick through different mutations is when you A.) Apply a filter the browser to find a specific gametype/mutation or B.) Are creating a new mutation lobby, obviously. The way everything is set up now is bass-ackwards, and one of the reasons why mutations are a joke unless you are playing with friends.

In fact, L4D2 should only have five main gamemodes: Singleplayer, Coop, Survival, Scavenge, and Versus. Mutations that are player vs player should be a subset of the Versus tab and shown by default (including Realism-Versus), and coop mutations should be listed under the Coop tab. You need to display a lot of lobbies first, THEN give players the option to narrow them down to find what they need, not the other way around. This is a failure of basic GUI implementation, and pretty embarrassing if you ask me.

Edit*

I would like to see a server list with all mutations avaiable in one list like campaign list.
I created a group for this:
