Is there such thing as a 'Best melee'? (excluding chainsaw)

I know blades cause bloody screens, nightstick has faster swing speed, but do some melee weapons have better stats than others? I also heard that the katana spawns rarely compared to other weapons, but does it make it better than other melees? Is it better than a baseball bat? Please post stats of different melees and their characteristics if you know any, or just post your favorite melee to use.

Apparently melee weapons have range and speed stats, and the katana is the best because it is fast and long-range.

The only differences in the weapons are swing speed and the size of the damage arc. The "best" one would be the fastest one with the arc that you prefer (a large arc potentially kills more zombies per swing during a horde, but also makes it more likely to hit an ally). There's no actual damage difference between weapons.

I also avoid the chainsaw. I consider it one of the worst melee choices because you can't bring it up quickly enough to use during a sudden horde attack, which is when I'm most likely to want to switch to melee, and during a long horde it'll run out of fuel, even if you "pulse" it. I'd much rather have any other weapon.

Except the baton. Screw the baton, I hate that thing.

The melee weapons differ in speed and range. The nightstick is fast but has a very small arc, while th axe is slower but with a bigger arc. There's no good or bad one, it's just whatever is the most useful for yourself.

Correct. Weapon spawning entities can include melee in the same category as a general item spawn (eg can also be molotov, ammo pack, etc), or they can just be labeled as melee. Regardless of whether they are an optional weapon or a scripted one, you can choose which melee weapons to spawn- could be just a katana/nightstick/etc, could be a katana or a nightstick but not an axe, or the maker can leave the field blank and have any melee.

There are indeed a few specific melee spawns. An example of the first method would be the most melee in most maps; the second, the map Absolute Zero specifies crowbar or nightstick only for the first chapter; the third, yes the scripted katanas in Dead Center, or maybe the one scripted in the first room in Questionable Ethics.
