Just got a new laptop and is shutting down playing L4D2
I have a Lenovo laptop I just got and I was playing L4D2 on it and it shut down. I didn't have time to write the error code, but thought maybe someone was familiar with the issue. I guess basically I'm not asking to fix my problem without a code, but if anyone can give me decent settings to play the game at so it won't shut down. I played on an older laptop that was a "lesser" one than I have now and it wasn't perfect, but never shut down. I'm wondering if maybe this one is getting too hot from running the game? I read a review of this laptop and although the graphics are integrated, they seem to run some popular games very well, but I know L4D2 is demanding. Thanks for any help and/or tips to make the game run, much appreciated. Here are the specs of what I am currently using:

Keep it cool and DEFINATELY keep it off your lap when playing
theventingguy 2014 年 2 月 16 日 上午 8:01
NEVER on my lap at all! LOL. Usually on a table. I was thinking of a cool pad. I'll try it tonight and grab the error code quicker this time and look it up. You have any tips on the settings or know a link to any? I'm guessing if I tone something down it may work better, but I'm pretty convinced it's a heat thing. Thanks

Reducing the graphics and turning ON V-sync will help keep things cool

OK. I've had this game for a while on my desktop, but it always just worked so I'm a bit new at the settings. I'll mess around and see what I can figure out. When you say the graphics are we talking total resolution, shader detail, etc? Or something more specific? I'll be honest, I don't even know what V-sync is, but now's the time to learn I guess. Fortunately I learn fast and I'll Google a lot of this and only ask questions if I can't find specifically what I'm looking for. Thanks.

V-sync is a way of capping your frame rate so that your PC doesn't overwork and overheat. Set it to Triple Buffer

Set Shader to medium or High to reduce Graphics heat

Turn OFF any Anti-aliasing, that takes ALOT of power

Turning down resolution is not nessesary

All this should help

Thanks, I will try that. Much appreciated. I'm messing with proc temps now and trying to determine what they are and how to keep them low. This i7 runs hot!

i7 are supposed to run very fast, they're among the best CPU to have right now

That's why I bought it, I figured no problem playing this game. When it works it works great, but then shuts down. I'm guessing it's just heat. I'm trying out speedfan and realtemp and I'm getting a fluctuation, but it seems to run hot even when just sitting. Not overly hot, but hot. I'm gonna get a cool pad for it I think.

when you say "it shut down" are you talking about the game or the laptop? Because Ive had some issues with the Win 8.1 drivers for the intel integrated grafics causing bluescreens (in all 3D applications btw), maybe you wanna try updating or downgrading them. Just try out a few, maybe thats causing the problems. Keeping your drivers up to date is always a good idea if you wanna play without too much trouble ;)

The laptop itself shut down. I did get a blue screen and an error code, but didn't have time to write code before it shut off. I just got the laptop recently and really didn't think to update the drivers so soon. I'll take a look at that though, thanks.

Define just how HOT it's running, In Celcius, please to start off.

Blue screen that says dumping memory means that you overheated

I don't know how hot it was running when it shut down. I know it was warm as hell when it shut down so I just let it cool. Right now I'm using Speefan to monitor temps. I'll try running the game later while doing the same. Right now it says I'm running between 25° to 30° C and HD0 is 34°. Not quite sure what that means yet. Earlier I was doing more and I was running around 60° and that wasn't even the game. BTW, I'm running the most current driver for my graphics.

Chaos Mana 2014 年 2 月 16 日 上午 10:21
60℃ is what my CPU ( 6 core AMD ) Runs in while playing on games with a 20-40℃ settle.

Games don't even use all the cores and I know my CPU can run up to 80 safely.

I think you said you're running on Laptop and I think I understand your problem to be that you don't have proper air flow which is the high cause of heat asside from dust being the most.

If you are getting 60℃ at settle something is either running in the background which uses power from your CPU, or what I mentioned above about the Airflow which will explain why your PC can't even run L4D2 without closing down
theventingguy 2014 年 2 月 16 日 上午 10:31
I don't know what it was running at when it shut off, but I have an i7, it will run hotter than your AMD. Right now I'm running at around 25° C just doing this. Earlier I was running a bit hot with several browsers open and doing multiple tasks. I'll monitor the temp later with the game running and see what happens. I'm pretty sure it's just temp and I'll be getting a cool pad to help. For now I will leave my laptop raised up for airflow. The laptop is brandy new so it's not dirty yet, no dust build up. I think the proc just runs really hot. It has a "silent fan" that I never hear until it's working hard, then it speeds up and I can feel hot air coming out of the side. laptops are not the best for cooling anyway. :)

Yeah I should mention the side of my tower has a huge airflow and I have a Tower fan with a giant fan on the top too
