Maybe try State of Decay, No More Room in Hell or Typing of the Dead: Overkill?
is this online only or can I play off line?

You can play State of Decay and Typing of the Dead offline. I'm pretty certain No More Room in Hell is multiplayer only, though.

"Similar" is always tricky. I assume you want games with zombies only?

Well there is "Contaigion" but that is still Early Acces, though incredibly polished
GFX-wise. Strong PC recommended. You almost won't believe that's Source engine.
It's online only, although you can play private, of course. Also, more hardcore
survival.

No More Room In Hell is awesome for a free game - They work on the animations
right now, they are a bit clunky - And it's more of a 'Hardcore Romero Survival' type
of game, too.

By "Hardcore Survival" I mean you don't go in guns blazing. Gotta be careful, and
headshot the damn things, conserve ammo.

If you look for more fast-paced horde action, and don't need zombies, I would
strongly recommend taking a look at Payday: The Heist (the first one).
Pretty difficult, and you need to be quite tactical - But you shoot cops and SWATS
like there's no tomorrow. LOTS of cops.
Drawbacks: No Zombies (duh!) and beyond the second mission/map you'd have a hard
time offline with bots. Like, almost impossible.

Second NMRiH, it's pretty awesome, and was made by the mapper who did Blight Path and No Parking. Both of the Paydays are close too.

I have yet to play Payday 2 - Though I heard+read that they dialed back the difficulty
a lot, and making it more "choose your approach", like being able to actually stealth
most missions. I know I will, though - At the latest during the next sale :)

I would like to stress my Payday suggestion further - If steelwheel is interested at all.
It's awesome in the way things are randomized, you never quite know from where the
buggers attack next, where the snipers position themselves, if those specials drop in
from the ventilation shafts and so on. Even after X playthroughs, they still catch you
by surprise quite often.

And regarding Contaigion: It's from the people that made Zombie Panic: Source, which
apparently was quite successful - Though I never played it myself.
Like L4D, they have player-controlled zombies and stuff like that.
And I'm not sure anymore if it isn't possible to play offline - Haven't touched it in a while.

Sorry for that awful wall of text, hope that gave steelwheel a few ideas, at least.
THX for reading :)

D0uche moment. There are zombies in it. The level in the no mercy hospital, there is a witch and sometimes a few tied up zombies:chains:

You don't actually fight, them, though?
I have played that one quite a lot, but never encountered actual, killable zombies?
Was it a special event, or am I missing something?
I do know that the bodybags in the cellar sometimes twitch.

And what's with that D0uche comment? Should I feel insulted?
Sry, it's awfully early in the morning with no sleep, so apologies if I imagine things.

Ok, but it's still just sort of an Easter Egg, right. I mean, the whole heist is a homage
to L4D, I do know that. What with Bill sometimes being in the elevator, the whole map
being No Mercy Hospital and whatnot. But, technically, no zombies in the usual game.

And yes, I took that comment right then. Plus, as I said, I should go to bed and stop
posting already. It's all a bit fuzzy :)

The first Payday game was alright but not many people play it, the second one is a huge bag of annoyances meant to force you to grind levels and experience to get anything decent, and then by the time you get all the decent stuff you have the few heists completely memorized and know the easy way to win without the high-level stuff and it turns into a giant mess of 'why bother'.

Also, unlocking gun parts and masks are random, end of each level you get to pick 1 of 3 cards, went 12 hours before I got my first red-dot sight and that was the #1 thing I wanted, but it's only 1 red-dot for 1 gun at a time. Costs money to install that sight, and costs money to uninstall it (I think, been a while) and more to install it on another gun. See how this can get annoying yet? Because really you have to do a whole heist just to earn the money to install that gun part you randomly got. The whole game is an MMO-styled grind in an FPS bundle. I would not suggest Payday 2 to anyone I like.

If you did like L4D, give Alien Swarm a go; it's pretty similar from the general gameplay idea (team of four navigating through a level).
It's free to play, but pretty old so YMMV with active players.

Thanks for all your replys, I am just looking for a game I can play offline I dont seem to do well in online grouyps (I am old and slow) so I like the games where things are simple go from A to B shoot a bunch of things and pick up a gun or two on the way. nmrih seems promising at this point I have also been offered half life as an alternitive. Again thanks for your input.

Despite your last post I'm still going to suggest Killing Floor. It's not very similar to L4D, despite the fact that some of the specimens bear resemblance to the L4D uncommon infected.

Can be played alone or with up to five others, co-operatively only. Wave-based survival game, a nice selection of perks and an increasing amount of weapons to choose from (augmented by the perks, if you use the right perk with the right weapons) and enemies that can be figured out and beaten without a steep learning curve.

Still takes a while to get used to, especially without crosshairs (iron sights aiming available, though) but it's generally slower, more predictable and easier than the L4D games.
