I think if you're aiming for body shots, even in coop, the lower dmg per bullet would indeed be wasteful and run out of ammo quickly.
If a laser sight is out of the question, M16 for increased accuracy.
Isn't it the weakest of the assault rifles? AK and SCAR both do more damage (?) but AK is less accurate and SCAR has the weird 3-round burst.
fast reload/rate of fire + close to mid range accuracy allow me to clear commons and pick off SIs quickly. i find it an invaluable weapon in situations where SPEED and MANAGING FRIENDLY FIRE is key.
for example, it's great for the Parish Finale and perhaps, Dark Carnival's coaster where NARROW paths often see shot-gunners friendly firing team mates to incapacitation on Expert.
regardless of laser sights or personal favourites, i normally chuck my main weapon when ammo runs low for a new, fully loaded, and appropriate one.
the only type of weapon i tend to hang on to are shotguns. absolutely no love for them in general, much less the tier 1 pump but if everyone in my team has upgraded to tier 2 rifles, i would hang on to it for a witch further down the map. once killed, i'd chuck it again for something else.
I have never once, ever, bothered for headshots in this game.
Regardless of difficulty level, headshots are completely and utterly irrelevant.
Ammo is so plentiful that by the time you run out, you have almost always come across the next ammo pile or gun to pick up.
Most SI can be killed by repeated shoving in close quarters if absolutely necessary.
Most SI and commons can be insta-killed with a melee weapon anyway.
Pistols never run out of ammo.
Throwables like Molotovs and Pipebombs annihilate 1-2 gun clips worth of infected.
From a gameplay perspective, enemies move too fast and the game is too direct-action focused for headshots to be relevant. Even sniping from a distance before they are aggro'ed is more or less pointless.
Headshots do provide additional damage and it is nice when they occur, but 99% of the time it is simply additional damage you gain by pure chance when a bullet hits them in the hit as you're firing at hordes of Infected or a Special Infected coming at you.
