Why does L4D2 start up so slowly?
Back when I first installed L4D2 on my new computer, it started up in about 2 seconds. But now, whenever I try to start the game, it takes about 10-15 seconds for the screen to even cut to black, then it takes almost a minute for the Valve logo to show up. I've tried deleting all of my other steam games as well as other programs and files, but nothing works.

The game itself runs very smoothly at recommended settings, and the load times within the game itself are still as quick as they were back when I originally installed it, so what could be causing the game to start up so slowly?

Steam Client > Library > Right-click l4d2 > Properties > Local files > verify Cache integrity.

I just tried this, and it still starts up slowly (most of the time not even starting at all, just freezing and forcing me to close the game)

All of my other non-source engine games all start up quickly without errors regardless of how much space I use on my hard drive, so what could possibly be causing these errors with all of the source engine games (as I've also had this happen with TF2 before I had to delete it)

Do you have workshop mods installed? If you do, unsubscribe from them and get your mods from Gamemaps.com
=[T$CElite]= Yamaha Jun 30, 2014 @ 5:42am ^ This. It could be due to mods. Even the custom radial menu slows the load time a bit. The console log indicates the problem in red. PeliRed6u6 Jun 30, 2014 @ 5:44am what anti-virus do u have? 8( shnick1980 Jun 30, 2014 @ 10:18am I used to use McAfee on my old computer (which I know is infamous for causing slowdown on many computers), but on my current computer I use Microsoft Security Essentials (which as far as I know doesn't cause slowdown, even on the more demanding games I play such as GTA IV) And yes, I did try ridding the game of all of the addons I had from the workshop, but it still didn't work. Then again, I only tried it once, so I could always reinstall it and try again. I'll also check the console log to see if I can figure out the problem PeliRed6u6 Jun 30, 2014 @ 11:22am 8( PeliRed6u6 Jun 30, 2014 @ 11:22am good luck! 8) mwob Jun 30, 2014 @ 11:42am Last edited by mwob; Jun 30, 2014 @ 11:42am shnick1980 Jun 30, 2014 @ 3:05pm Well, I tried bypassing the intro, which the game did, but gave me an almost equally long load screen as some sick way of making up for it I went into the game's console log, but only found this: Parent cvar in server.dll not allowed (spit_scaling_min_scale) Game supporting (2) split screen players maxplayers set to 18 UpdateSystemLevel: ConVar mat_queue_mode controlled by gpu_level/cpu_level must not be marked as FCVAR_ARCHIVE or FCVAR_CHEAT! Dharok The Wretched Jun 30, 2014 @ 3:31pm The bottom ones look like mods that are screwing around with the environment.. Definitely double check you have all mods disabled, then verify your game cache and retry. =[T$CElite]= Yamaha Jun 30, 2014 @ 4:24pm

Ignore the post above, there is nothing out of the ordinary.
If you have any mods installed, i suggest you remove them manually from the addon folder. Or back them up and then test how fast it will load.

That's the point, I already took the mods out of the addons folder, and I still saw no difference to the load times

Although, I do currently have some other steam games installed, should I try deleting them then trying to run L4D2?

If that's your only problem, I would recommend using that waiting time to pour yourself a nice glass of water for the intense gaming later. :)
