How to write in chat?

When playing games, you can write in chat to talk with other players... How do you do when playing with an Xbox controller? (I play L4D2 if it changes something) I'm trying things but it won't work... Any ideas?

You go down to options, to the keyboard/conytroller edit, change the buttons back to Y and U
