Any time you're in water, you swim in the direction you're looking at. So if you move while looking straight forward, you swim forward, and if you move while looking upward, you swim upwards. If you've sunk to the bottom of a pool, you can get out by looking/moving/swimming upwards.
When you walk accross the pond, you don't swim though. It's as if you're walking on a puddle
