Streets of Rogue 2? Already? I think not.
So I have seen a couple comments from devs delaying some major awesome features until the sequal. Is it really practical though? I don't really think so. Not only are we still in early access but so many cool features are missing. I bought this game not only because I thought it would be awesome (which it is!) but because there was room for improvement. So many features have been put off (I hesitate to use that word though because it makes the devs seem lazy, WHICH THEY ARE NOT!) to a sequal that is crazy far ahead in the future and not even realistic to think about. I feel that even though not planning a sequal (at least for now) would be a better move because it would give the freedom for some major updates which would make the game even better than it already is (did I already mention that I LOVE THIS GAME!). Please don't think that I'm ripping on the devs because I'm not. I'm just stating what I'm sure a lot of people have been thinking, that a sequal is a little unrealistic to think about for now when so many new features have already been suggested especially since we aren't even out of the early access stage yet. Thanks for your time!

The only dev is Madguy. And the only suggestions being postponed to a sequal are extreme updates that would actually require a rework from the ground up to implement. Such as second floors to buildings, as I imagine the game was only in mind for 2D performance, and adding layers of depth (such as the jump into water for example) have side effects that the game was never meant to account for. Or Minecraft esque chunk loading for a procedually generated open world. I believe Vehicles were also in this category, as game design from npcs to map generation to combat mechanics were not designed for such things.

I apologize if I gave you the wrong impression about this, but I think you're overreacting at the moment.

I don't think I'm overreacting I'm just not understanding why a sequal is already being stated this early into the game. There is still room for big updates aren't there?

To set the record straight on this:

The type of features that I would leave for a sequel (if that were to happen, it's WAY too early to discuss a sequel except in broad terms) would -- as I state in the FAQ -- "change the scope and complexity of the game by a huge degree, and add a large amount of development time." Things like an open world, vehicles, and multi-story buildings. The latter two might seem like "just another feature", but the reality is that these would affect so, so, SO many aspects of the gameplay that they're simply not feasible right now. The game is gradually getting to a point where it's optimized and not-terribly-buggy (which has not been easy to accomplish given that Streets of Rogue is a very complex game with loads of disparate systems working together in harmony) and features like these would be like dropping an atom bomb into the mix. There's still a lot of content to add, but I think the game is in a pretty good place gameplay- and feature-wise, and I'd like to focus the remainder of development primarily on content, balance and bug fixes.

Streets of Rogue is very much a "kitchen sink" sort of game, but if I were to add all of the good ideas I've got in my list of good ideas, it would remain in Early Access for a very long time and probably emerge a very different game. As a game developer, keeping the scope down to a reasonable level is pretty important. Otherwise you end up with Duke Nukem Forever, remaining in development for 15 years because you tried to add every cool feature that came to mind.

Thanks for replying and I definitely get what you mean. I was just hoping that we could get some more awesome features without having to buy the sequal. Not saying there aren't more awesome features to come (I'm sure there are). Great game though! I am loving every minute of it!

I agree that trying to add every single idea would pull a Half-life 2 dev time
but you should be careful not to short change your self and by extention the game.

Sequels are always a good way to implement the kinds of things that - as Madguy here just stated - "change the scope and complexity of the game by a huge degree, and add a large amount of development time."

For instance, helpful NPCs tend to get used up in a single fight pretty easily, if it isn't having them cover your escape from a group of mobsters. Sure, there's things like mixing a Giantizer with water pistols to give a custom Zombiism character some real teeth, but that's more Frankensteining your buddies and less arming them like a true leader.

It'd take some additional lightweight RTS elements to have friends the old-fashioned way.

And we can go on and on about "What if air vehicles" or "What if 4 times the resolution" or "What if psuedo-3D graphics" but they all require the same thing: a lot of effort.

Yeah and lots of effort goes into game making though.
