Can't launch the game

Hello,

I have a very strange problem with my Mafia II: GOTY edition. I succesfully installed the game from the DVD and it was added to my Steam library. However, when I try to launch it, Steam says it must check if there are any updates first. The pop-up says it will take approx. 2 minutes.

When the bar fully loads, it says there is actually some content that must be downloaded in order to play the game. So another update starts in Steam. The file has 7.3 GB, so it takes a while to download. When it's done, it looks like you can finally launch the game. But when you do it, the pop-up "Checking updates" reappears, an update is discovered and Steam starts to download the 7.3 GB file again. And when it's done, again. It's a loop.

Please, does anybody know what to do? I'm desperate. I tried various things and went through the process about ten times with no result. It always starts from the scratch.

Try launching the game as Admin (right-click on the shortcut or game executable and "Run as Admin".)
If that doesn't work... Steam support ticket!

Sorry, been away and haven't checked the forums. Thank you for your suggestion, but I didn't find this option upon right-clicking the shortcut. Actually the desktop shortcut says it's not an application (.exe) but online adress instead (URL is steam://rungameid/50130). I'm absolutely baffled.

As for searching the solution via Google - I had no luck. So I went here. To be honest, I have no idea how to contact Steam support.

First I would verify the integrity of the game just to make sure its not missing something else and thinks its missing the update. Never know but just might work.

As for running in Admin mode for some OS you have to go to where the game is installed directly. So in your programs folder in file explorer (depending on OS may vary but mine is under program files x86) and find steam from there steamapps> Common> Mafia 2 and right click the .exe

OK, I went to this directory and there are only four folders: _CommonRedist, 3rd, Edit, PC. No .exe actually. Yet the game is listed among installed software. I'm lost.
