So far the story in mafia 3 has yet to continue the one from mafia 2.

And I have played 4hrs of mafia3.... (to compare, I completed mafia2 in ~12hours)

mafia 3 doesn't continue the story

it doesn't continue but it puts it to a close by saying that joe was killed by some of Leo's men and then later in the game hints that he may have been given a deal as someone looks just like him later on
