Is L4D1 obsolete?
I saw that L4D2 has the campaigns from the first game available as a free download. Did this pretty much kill the first game? Is there any real reason to own both games, or to choose the first one over the second?

I've always believed L4D1 to be a better game then the sequal even after the release of the first games campaign's. Even though the campaigns are the same maps there are still considerable differences between them. The L4D2 versions have the (in my opinion) very cartoon graphic style of L4D2, rather than the darker style of the first game. All the new special infected, new guns and melee weapons from L4D2 are also in these version, which in my opinion unbalances the game. So I would argue that the original game is much better for a fixed four man team on headsets playing very tacticaly. I also really dislike the look of alot of the special infected (including the new models of the original four). So I think L4D1 is superior game and therefore not obsolete. However it really depends on whether or not you mind the graphic style and new weapons/special infected of L4D2.

I would also add that I think the audio assets of L4D1 are far superior. Better music, better sound quality and overall better sound design.

L4D2 also has some serious problem with bugs, which are present in the new version of the L4D1 campaign's aswell as the original L4D2 ones. Broken audio dialogue and glitchy character models to just name a few.

Not sure, but i had l4d for awhile and just got l4d2. Yes, it has the toons and maps from l4d but i'm happy with both, personally

I guess it's only two fifty extra to get the bundle I'd just as soon play the original campaigns in the format they were designed for. Thanks for the input.

There is nothing that justifies owning L4D1 when everything is in L4D2. There are tiny, insignificant differences between the ports, but they're just that. Who cares?

Maybe so, but considering I just spent 75 dollars on gas, a potentially squandered $2.50 is hard to get worked-up about. At the very least, there's te possibility that the slightly older game will run smoother on my system. And if nothing else, I vastly prefer the player characters of the first game.

The differences are certainly significant. The bugs that trouble L4D2 that were not in L4D1 but have been carried over to the L4D2 versions of the classic campaigns such as broken animations and character speech. The new weapons and special infected. The cartoony graphics style, stupid defibs and overpowed melee weapons that make common infected pointless. L4D2 is also considerable less polished, Hunters for instance have about four different Leaping animations in L4D1. In L4D2 they have one. L4D2's character are also bland and uninteresting, even more so when compared with the interesting and likable survivors playable in the original game. The overall feel of L4D2 is also nowhere near as dark, gloomy or atmospheric, L4D2 almost seemed comedic after your slaughter a plethera of zombie with a guitar, atop a rock stage, with fireworks being launch around you blowing more zombie in to little tiny pieces, to hard rock music, in the middle of a carnival, with a gnome.

As much as L4D2 has a plethora of content that L4D does not I still find my self liking L4D far more overall. It comes down to a few simple things:

  • The atmosphere, IMO has been done far better in #1 due to its darker tone.
  • The way the animations in #2 are piss poor where as in #1 I find the animations and sounds fluid and smooth.
  • Shotguns, for some reason the way they fire and respond to you in #1 just feels more natural and accurate to me, I love the pump in #1 but can't stand them in #2, it feels like the entire gun model/animation is laggy and unresponsive.
  • Characters, the L4D characters are far more impressive to me, combined with being able to use vocalize freely it adds to that atmosphere above.
  • Finally legs! Not seeing my legs in #2 is just plain alien to me.

Free Weekender here. I agree, I like L4D's characters more than L4D2's super boring ones; the only thing L4D2 has going for it is that Rochelle is cute.

The most important thing in a FPS is the guns. Indeed Valve did poor job of it in left 4 dead 2. In half life 2 the guns also suck. Seems the only reason the guns are good in left 4 dead as it was done by turtlerock.

L4D1 isn't obsolete, just nearly obsolete by the fact L4D2 exists so new people to the series will likely get L4D2 since it's got a lot of stuff from L4D1 (even if it's not as good as the original) and the majority of the community have moved onto L4D2 :(
