you can buy from the retail or steam. the game will finally link, update and run in steam only. there is no problem with it...

As soon as you get your cd-key, click games, activate game on steam and then when its done you can download and it will have all the dlc included.

You're not making any sense in your reasoning of not being able to purchase from Steam.
But yeah. Left 4 Dead boxed version is a Steamworks game.

Unless you get scammed and buy a pirated version, the retail version of L4D acts the same as directly buying it from Steam. The only difference is that L4D on steam often goes on sale for 5 bucks, and the retail boxed version doesn't. Also about 7GB of info will be loaded from the disk, the remainder will have to be downloaded, and Valve has increased the game to about 10GB.
