Character conversations?
Just finished L4D, and something odd I noticed during it was that all the supposed character quips (Francis hating everything, stuff Bill is supposed to say, etc.) rarely ever happened for me. There were literally 2 things like that: Bill making a joke about there being another zombie outbreak in the past while on an elevator, and near the end francis saying he hates islands and louis saying he'll keep an eye on the island for him. I looked on youtube and there's a TON of stuff I never heard in my game. I dunno if this is a glitch or if I have to play online to hear everything, but I feel like my whole experience has been somewhat sullied because of it, since I'd always heard the character interactions were awesome and funny (Not really into multiplayer games so this was a big reason I bought them). I just started L4D2 and played a few levels. There seems to be a little more player interaction like Ellis introducing himself to everyone and saying how people call him El, but other than that there's not really been much (I find it odd he introduced himself and nobody else did) I've only played the first 2 levels. I'd definitely like to know if there's a reason this happened to me and if there's anything I can do to prevent it from happening in the second game.

Thanks.

the character conversation in L4D2 is very much funny...Ellis is the best lol
All the lines lingers with a map in the game. Some of Francis' hatelines is only triggered when you look at the specific object he hates. Fx in Death Toll last map, if you look at the van outside the saferoom as him, Francis will respond "I hate vans."

Or in Crash Course on the bridge beside the saferoom, there is a sign that says "RIVERSIDE". If you look at it long enough the character will respond to the sign.

The audio lines will be randomly heard throughout the levels, just play them multiple times and you will understand.
Ah, I see. So it's sort of an incentive to replay the game multiple times? Got it. :)

No, its just to increase game's replayability quality.
...which is another way of saying what I just said. Replayability=incentive to replay.
I don't think anyone cares if they miss out a line or two when they stop playing the game
For me it was the main thing that drew me into the game in the first place. I love games where characters banter. I just finished The Carnival in the 2nd game and there is definitely more bantering in this one. My favorite so far is Coach breaking the news to Ellis that he isn't tall enough for the ride :)
