Problems playing l4d 1
Since last week, I have been having problems starting up l4d 1. This began after the game updated. I assume it was the update for the Mac users to correct their problem but it ended up making it impossible for me to play the game. Whenever I start up the game, it collapses back to the desktop just seconds after its initiated through steam. My Operating system is Windows Vista. Is there anyone else having the same issues as me?

That's awfully strange. I run l4d on XP. I am having no problems.

I run it on xp also with no problems playing,but I do have strange sound problem after update.Everything sounds like 1 channel (mono).Also sounds that are off in the distance are magnified like they are close.I'm about to reload my old L4D files from a previous hard drive just to see if it generates normal sound levels again.

If that works for you Dudesauce could you please post that here? I would like to know for sure if it was the update that ruined my game and damaged yours. Thank you.

Interesting find for me...It appears to be the steam client itself and not the game update.The older files worked yes with the older steam client.But same problem with old l4d files and new steam client(not beta).I haven't tried newer l4d files with older steam client,but I think it's the new steam client update and not the game...at least for me.The client I tested was about two or three updates ago.

Tested on the following machine:
CPU= AMD Athlon XP 2800+
RAM= 2GB (2X1GB)
VGA= ATI Radeon 9550 10.2 driver (256MB) AGP 8X BUS
SOUND= nforce2 (onboard)
Windows XP
I have a new machine but L4D is not installed on there only L4D2.I use this old computer whenever I can to get the most use out of it.

Thank you Dudesauce for responding and sharing your results with me. I appreciate all of your help and assistance. I hope that now I may be able to help you. After I read your post, and after talking to another friend on Steam, I begin to think that you and he were on the right track when it came to the problem. I began to believe that my problem was not a corrution of the game itself, but that the Steam client was broken and needed to be fixed. My friend (whose Left for Dead 2 game was broken), contacted Valve. He tried many things which all failed but the last thing he tried worked. He sent that to me last night and I followed his advice step by step. My game is now fixed. Below, I have listed everything I did in order to fix Left for Dead. I hope this can help you as well Dudesauce, especially since you are of the same mind as I was that our problem could be traced to the Steam Client. Goodluck and I hope this helps you. If it does, please let me know.

Step 1: First Disable Steam Cloud by right clicking the game in your library. Scroll down and select "Properties". Then Select the "Updates" tap. Once you have done that, uncheck the box for Steam Cloud.

Step 2: Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Step 3: Delete all of the files in this folder except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe (If 'exe' is not visible, look for the black and white Steam icon)

Step 4: Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps"

Step 5: Restart your computer.

Step 6: Once you are back to your desktop, you will need to launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut. (In other words, put Steam.exe back into the installation folder you originally took it from before clicking it in order to re-install steam.)

Step 7: With Steam running, re-install the game without launching it.

Step 8: Once the game is installed and with Steam open, Click on Steam > Settings > Downloads + Cloud.

Step 9: Uncheck the box at the bottom in order to stop Cloud synchronization from happening.

Step 10: Then, launch the game and re-test the issue.

Step 11: If the problem is solved, you can re-enable Cloud synchronization.

Final Step: The final step will be to go to SteamApps old folder then go to the "Common" folder. Delete Left for Dead 1, then copy all of your games in that folder to the Common folder in the New SteamApps folder that was created when you re-installed Steam and Left for Dead 1. That way you will not have to re-download all of your games. The reason for this is that when you created a new SteamApps folder, the only game in it was Left for Dead 1.

Cool I'll try it when I get time.

I am closing out this thread by posting the resolution to my game crashing issue. The steps that I listed above did help, but only for only a few days. I sent off a ticket in order to get assistance from Steam Support, however their ideas didn't work. A friend helped me to troubleshoot the issue. Thanks to him, I have finally fixed the problem for good. The issue was that two programs were conflicting with each other every time I launched l4d1 or l4d2. I use a messenger called Xfire, which is designed for people who play PC games. It is basically a messenger/chat program that works when you are in and out of a game. Apparently it was causing the Steam Client to crash whenever I started the game since each program competes for access to the game at launch. I simply went into Xfire and disabled it from detecting any steam games. I haven't had any problems since...so far so good, no more crashing. I hope this solution helps anyone who has or is having similar problems with their games.
