A game where you take any song, and it dictates the speed and content of the level. It's a top-down dual-stick shooter that seems to take inspiration from Asteroid and others.
Each song is it's own level, and you can use mp3 songs, ITunes songs, not sure what other formats though aside from those.
You want more levels? You get more songs and you play them. In addition to this, the DLC allows you to access more ships which play differently (essentially allowing for an entirely different playstyle with certain ones) and gives challenges to aim for, and the other DLC adds in 100% more stuff. Imagine with this last DLC, that you took beat Hazard and added one new thing for every old one.
So Beat Hazard's DLC is entirely worth it in my opinion.
There are powerups, Damage and Volume. One makes you do more damage, and the other increases the song's volume which gives you many benefits alongside more projectiles and more damage aswell. Max them both out, and you go into Beat Hazard mode, which makes the game WAY easier to kill things.
You die in one hit, so it is VERY challenging as some challenges require to never die in a song on high difficulties.
You gain Exp in the amount of Points you gain (you get 1000 points on a song, you get 1000 Exp) and there are ranks/levels, but only Shadow Operations ranks really dictate what you have access to.
Ranks do dictate the giving of perk points however.
There's Elite ranks that go on for forever, they're more for bragging rights more than anything.
You can put together playlists of songs in the game you can listen to randomized shuffles of your library that go on and on until you die, or you can even listen to a radio station until you die, like the christmas radio station, which provides challenge greater than all my Dragonforce and Metallica songs (I have about 19 metallica, and 6 dragonforce songs).
Only special abilities and enemy attacks use sounds, but nothing really is every louder than the music, unless you set it accordingly.
So... I recommend this game, it's great fun for it's price, the DLC is priced very well in my opinion, and so long as there's always music, there's always levels for this game, so content is potentially unlimited. Basically an interactive music player, blast enemies as you listen to your tunes.
I give this game a 9/10, ignoring the fact that I have no friends who want to play this game. This game is simply great. Challenging or easy when you want either. I hear playing with others makes it serious fun.
