Whenever I test out a ShootEmUp from some greenlit indie game, I always think... does this have anything to offer that Beat Hazard doesnt do better. 90% of the time at least the answer is no.
Beat Hazard is an excellent ShootEmUp, with the music driven twist that adjusts the number of ennemies as well as your rate of auto-fire to the rate of the music playing. Its not always perfectly spot on but for the mos part this feature works very well.
Being able to play with your own music is very enjoyable, and helps give each game its own tone and sense of progression which otherwise would sometimes be lacking certainly and become repetitive much quicker
I am not very good at ShootEmUps but there are a lot of game modes from just casually going through with fewer ennemies to rogue-like permadeath style games with much harsh victory conditions
I find not cranking the difficulty to the max is usually better as your own music can become distracting and this is not the kind of game that is forgiving at higher difficulties to distraction
A con is that the flashy effects are sometimes a little over the top and can obfuscate a lot of the screen and even daze you quite a bit especially on higher difficulties where you spam heavy bombs
I would recommend this game. I see it as one of the few references in the genre and I am glad it is in my collection
One of the Best "Play your own Music"-Games I've ever playes. Kudos to the Game Designer. Its visually stunnig, Gameplay is quick to learn and motivating. The dlcs are also worth the money. Must have for Genre-Lovers!
