Unused settings in the Config File
Lets just get to work and fix this thing. THERE ARE ALSO EASTER EGGS

This config file is a mess! But I think there's ALOT here that can be tinkered with.... but unforuntaly Im a little out of my depth. This is a slightly more technical config file than I'm familiar with.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Aliens Colonial Marines\Engine\Config

Edit <----This seems to be the file to play with
C:\Users\Crank\Documents\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame\Config

PecanEngine <---

A good place to start is; after u open an ini file in notepad, hit cntrl+f and search "settings' this will take you to the 'System settings" portion of the file that most resembles the normal video options of a PC game. Various effect options are there, alot of them in fact. Tho there are alot of other lines in other places that look like they should do alot.

Make backup copies of any files you change. Or if you cause crashing, and have no backups /can't remember what you changed; then just delete the file you changed and verify local

Ripley: So, if they fire their weapons in the Config file, won't they rupture the cooling system?

Gorman: [turns round to Burke] So what?

I do coding and will take a look but dont get your hopes up. If there was something there it would of been found by now by people who enjoy doing just that.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm interesting. Well its the Ureal engine obviously. But there MIGHT just be something there. All the lighting, shadows, steam effects might actually be something that can be toggled back on. Maybe get it closer to looking like the demo. But the gameplay will be the same. there is not fixing that on our end. Seems they may release a user editor but who knows. If they do that, it might generate user maps. Doubt they'll allow single player maps, no one does that anymore. I'll tweak the ini files and see. Dont expect miracles though.

look for a file called pecanengine.ini, also you cant really config anything i've tried turning on dx 11, GIGS of stuff are misssing, how can you turn on anything that doesn't exist? its set inside your

Unlock 120 FPS by editing MaxSmoothedFrameRate[3] •
1. Go to: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Aliens Colonial Marines\Engine\Config\BaseEngine
2. Open: BaseEngine.ini
3. Change line MinSmoothedFrameRate=22 to MinSmoothedFrameRate=62
4. Change line MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62 to MaxSmoothedFrameRate=120

I don't have fraps or anything so I can't test this, but it looks smooth as hell.

aaaand wtf is this.... nerfin?

; Whether to force use of power-of-two LOD textures (uses more memory, but may have better performance)
; NOTE: Currently enabled until non-pow2 textures are supported on core platforms
ForcePowerOfTwoProcBuildingLODTextures=True

I bet 'core platforms" means consoles

Messy messy aint it? You can see dev notes, what he project was called. Pecan is all over the place. 3 dev user settings. You can tell they rushed this thing out. They didnt clean that stuff out. I wonder if one of the Dev settings gets you closer to what the demo looked like. Again nothing in there will affect game play. Also note under the steam properties for the game, under BETA tab you have the dev settings available, also a press preview setting. Might be worth investigating that. Im looking for good stuff like steam effects like the demo. We can change the lighting so its gloomier like the demo. Be nice if we can change the particle effects to. Steam, fire, explosions ect. Those were horribly nerfed.

Yeah I caught that. Like I said, a lot of developer notes in the ini files. Might be nice and reverse what he did. I think we all have rigs that can run higher textures. Set that to FALSE and see if it has immediate effect. Just make sure you save all the files in backup while making changes.

Anyone have the Ureal UDT editor? Latest one? I guess I can install it and see if I can open the maps up.

Well fog and steam particle effects are in the game folders. Just not all of them are activated. So thats promising. At least that was one of the cool things seen in the demo. More steam, more fog, reduce the spotlights and overall lighting so its darker. Im still looking to see if they removed the original explosion particle effects. Possibly renamed them in a backup. The ones in game now are horrible. Almost look like 2D sprites.

EDIT:: Nice! They have things called UBER Postprocessing and Textures, lighting. All turned off but files are still there and ini config call outs. UBER can only mean good things. Currently they have whats called COMMON postprocessing, textures and lighting activated. UBER can only mean better................I hope.

try it and report back .. somehow i'm thinking it's just going to crash hard because those settings were meant for a different engine.

So maybe just maybe Gearbox can set some things straight ? like make the game better looking just like the demo ?
saint.f Feb 14, 2013 @ 1:54am
if you're gonna mess w/your config files, ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF THE ORGINALS
but if u don't and you mess them up. just delete them, and steam will patch back the defaults, if u verify local
