Admittedly, I did a lot of side missions to level up and to add variety to the gameplay. I think the counter said I did 90 side missions. Still, I finished the story at level 33 so it wasn't too much.
For anyone new, I'd sooner say 1-2 hours per story mission, plus time spent exploring, doing sidequests, leveling...
You get less experience when you fight lesser enemies -as in, guys way weaker than you-, so you could hit level 30, then do a dozen level 20 side quests and barely get enough experience for half a level.
Sometimes I join lower level games just to help people, and I literally get 1 xp from killing enemies, so you could spend 70 hours playing and end up with as much experience as someone who beat the game in 12. Side missions are only there as extra content, but they aren't of any use on the experience department, unless you are super under-leveled.
With the amount of time I spent exploring, listening to dialog, read everything, and just looking at maps, I can't imagine anyone finishing the story in 12 hours.
But I've seen some lets play of people playing for the first time and they rush through the minute they start playing. I can't do that. I need to look at everything.
