If you save and quit without finishing the map however, you will respawn at the last fast travel station or level transition you passed.
You have to defeat the Handsome Sorcerers Dragon and move on to the "Lair of Infinite Agony" to save your progress.
This an intentional design decision. Maps get repopulated and bosses respawn, which allows you to play the game on an endless loop, hunting for loot and farming bosses for their best drops.
So I'm **expected to spend hours on this one area without stopping to do anything else** just to make it through? Because if that's the case Gearbox can join so many other companies on the list of collections of people who can kiss my ass -- I loved the game up until now, but it's not worth all of the rage it's going to cause me struggling to make it through this, along with likely murdering my PC, just to attempt to finish the game.
You will respawn at the last checkpoint if you die but not if you save & quit.
This applies to all the areas in the game, so you might remember it wrong.
If you don't respawn at the latest save point after dying something isn't working as intended, though I don't know what could be causing the issue.
@Y'arr: There's no fast travel unit there, at least none that I saw yet. I made it there this morning and then let it auto-save (made sure it was finished of course), then did Escape to go to Menu and then pressed Save and Quit, then quit the game + Steam and went to bed. Started the game back up and I'm down at freaking Hatred's Shadow again. Climbed my way back up the mountain yet again and got killed by some douche just on the other side of those shops, and then reset to the bottom of the mountain and I tried to run my way back up past the respawned asshats I'd already killed along the way and died again, and that's when I gave up.
That's where you are supposed to start if you haven't made it to the "Lair of infinite Agony" yet.
Yeah. Until you get to the end of Hatred's Folly you can't get to another fast travel station.
Thank you, Y'arr and Lord Cyphre. Sorry for this pointless thread =\
No problem. You handled this like a boss.

Yeah, it is. Already taken well over $600k from me in-game *just in that part of the map*; only reason it's not more is because I keep selling off garbage items I find...which is most of them.
