I really hate playing as a skulk
Is anyone else in this boat? I've been trying this game out today and I've run into the fact that Marines are always full when I join a server and as an alien you spend 90% of the game as a skulk.

It feels like its really difficult to get a bite off on marines, especially because they usually start hopping all over the place whenever you get in a fight with them. And it takes multiple bites to kill a marine so you get in, get a bite off MAYBE and then they just gun you down. They also have the ability to basically instakill you from any range.

When you get the more advanced alien forms it becomes better but it just seems like I'll save up all my points, get to have fun for a bit as something other than a skulk and then I'm a skulk again for a good long while.

I want to like this game but I'm just not digging it.

Skulks take getting used to, remember, be sneaky use the walls and wall jumping to your advantage and never charge straight at marines, that's just asking to get killed. As for the marine jumping thing, it just takes practice you'll get it eventually.
Im the meantime Gorge might be a good role to play for you, it's a fairly cheap class and is less focused on good timing and high reflexes.
Skulks are meant to be hit and run ambushers; scouting and taking marines 1v1 then clipping off res nodes early game. You shouldn't engage more than 1 marine unless you are in a pack in which you should dip in and get a nip or two in and then veer off, letting others get the kill while you soften them up. Good skulks are rarely on the ground, once you get used to walljumping then you will see your survivability jump. If you save enough res for a higher lifeform, you should never throw it away for no reason, you should always retreat and heal up before your armor is completely drained. If you get good at hit and runs you can survive long enough between lifeforms to save enough res to go lerk, fade, or onos again.
Remember: You only get res while you are alive, so sitting in res timers cuts into res flow as well.

I actually prefer skulks gameplay. There should be a version of a skulk that you can sink 10 res into and get a beefier hit point pool at the cost of a slightly larger hitbox.
Once you learn the maps (and the vents) and get good at wall/ceiling jumping the skulk becomes much more enjoyable. I've come out the winner in 3v1 fights against marines (and not just cause of poor aim on the marine's part, although that was a factor lol). Remember most marines very rarely look up and a lot of the rooms have high ceilings with decent cover. It's all about getting the ambush and then keeping them confused.

I will say that I am all for adding more variety to the skulks in terms of upgrades, so that we aren't completely overwhelmed by shotty/jetpacks, flames, nade launchers, if we want to play skulk over the other classes.

If you don't like playing skulk, why not try gorge? You can transform at the beginning and stay gorge the whole time and be effective in helping your team defend bases/bile bomb stuff (assuming you play gorge correctly). In my experience, its much less frustrating than getting 1 shotted by shottys as skulk.

But too many gorges gets an alien team killed early. Half gorge end game isn't uncommon and the amount of bile 6 gorges can lay down is dominating. But early on, too many gorges leads to marines RT and bases not being harrassed.

Skulks are AWESOME, the problem most new players have is adjusting to the tactics required and general mindset of a strong skulker. Once you regularly take down 2-3 marines solo (can still be done reliably in many areas of the maps even after the hitreg fix) and chomp an entire team (with support), you will grow to love the little bugger!

There are some good tutorial vids out there if you want to have a look, otherwise, practice Gorging and Lerking? both are fairly easy to get - thus (if you are good) letting you stay as that lifeform for 90% of the game.

I'm aware of how easy it is to kill all gorge teams, but how often do you see those (not counting the day Gorgeous came out. I predicted weeks before release that i'd see quite a few of them.) teams in normal games? I haven't seen many at all. Even if there are some games I don't see, he could easily play 95% of games as a gorge with no problems (and maybe try lerk if there is too many gorges like BiteThePain said above)
A huuuuuuge thing with skulks and getting killed easily is that you must jump lots to make them move their mouse when aiming. This way their aim is off, and you have a better chance at getting away if you dont make the kill.

Pretty much never see all gorge teams. Unless it's a gorge hydra rush which rarely works.

On a team of 12, having 4 gorges I think should be the max early game. Too many gorges limits Aliens in how they can harass RTs. And that is key to Aliens. Plus, having too many gorges in one area to skulks can lead to bad outcomes. 3 Gorges, no skulks against 6 marines in Bar? Not a good outcome for Aliens even with lots of hydras. Replace 2 gorges with a few skulks and alien chances go way up.

That said, I do tend to play gorge alot. Hence my icon.
ambushing is virtually impossible these days with the change to camo and the profileration of glow in the dark texture mods

Ambushing is very much possible if you aren't like some idiot skulk sitting above a doorway or in a corner...... Use sound to your advantage, stay around a corner or in a spot that is NOT visible to marines, then when you hear their footsteps, come out and jump on them.

Skulks are my favorite thing to play in this game, but you reallly have to know what you are doing to not die constantly playing one. For starters, lots of times it is not good to jump on a marine and trying to constantly follow him while biting to kill him. Lots of times it is best to jump on a marine and take 1-2 bites, then dash up a wall/around a corner/cieling quickly and come back around and take another 1-2 bites.

Also, you need the patience to not just run and attack a marine when you see them or when they are in ambush range... you need to look at your fellow players and see if any are coming to help and attack when they do, especially from multiple direction is best.

Use wall hopping to great effect to gain speed. If you didn't know, if you jump off walls , you gain speed.

I love skulks they are very sneaky that's their main attribute in my opinion at end game a camaflouge skulk can gaurantee a kill but at start game you have celerity ussualy so you have to wall jump which I find very effective.
