It takes 9-10 bullets to kill a vinilla skulk without any weapon upgrades. That's not much.
Actually the Fade is the fastest moving enemy in the game.
Furthermore, the best thing you can do when you hear a skulk coming is put some distance between you and it.
Although, I do have to agree that the Rifle is garbage on Combat Servers. Especially in actually trying to kill the hive.
You sure about that? While both the shotty and LGM are regular damage types, a Level 3 weapons Shotty does almost 250 damage per hit. Granted, that's at close range but you should be able to do that with a JP. And generally, the weapon that gets the fleeing Onos is the pistol. Hahaha.
Also 9-10 bullets isn't much? Play as a skulk againts some good shots and you'll be melted instantly.
Especially if they hear you coming.
And considering what some aimbots are capable of as youtube shows us, the rifle can be pretty dominating.
Bunny hop and back up. Rifle isn't a bad weapon. Outside of Combat Servers.
I don't have any problems with my rifle. Maybe you can record some of your rifle battles and show us what is wrong with it?
Also when you say 'general consensus' you mean 'I don't have numbers or proof but I think it is this way', so put up numbers and/or polling data along with methodology or :getout:
I didn't want to say that, but basically - even though in a very harsh formulated way - you are right. Sure, the assault rifle isn't as powerful as a shotgun blast up close. But which other weapon alternative is that? Therefore you got some mid to long range capability AND least we forget the rifle stock punch function. I don't know how many times this melee attack saved my butt.
Do you really think iron sights would improve your chances to hit a fast moving target? The rifle is pretty accurate as it is. You won't need an iron sight to ramp that up. It'd be more of a hindrance in most if not all cases, cause you'd have an even harder time to track those fast moving targets.
What do you understand by a more realistic movement system? Skulks not being able to bunny hop or maybe even to wall walk? Yeah, I see how that will work out... not. Sure, it will be fun to mow down skulk packs, which are basically welded to the floor. But I'd like you to try and get in biting range as an alien player then. Good luck!
Mind the FREE aspect. As I can see on your profile, Mr. OP, you are mainly playing counterstrike, where everything but the basic pistol and knife costs money. Would you rather start with pistol and axe only in NS2, having to buy even the basic assault rifle after each respawn? Suddendly the assault rifle will be looking much more powerful, considering not everyone will be able to buy one and therefore must stick to the pistol.
So, in the end I must refer to Squishpoke again: Learn to aim. Sure the assault rifle is crap, if you can't get the needed shots in a skulk. But so is every other weapon. Even the flamer does have a very small area of effect. If you can actually manage to track your target, most skulks will fall in the blink of an eye. As for higher lifeforms, you aren't supposed to be able to kill them on your own in the first place with the assault rifle. That's why NS2 is a team game.
Generally, the #1 reason why I see people fail (including myself) with the rifle is lack of space. Most of the time I hear them coming and back up, I can reliably take down 2 skulks. When It's close quarters, that generally doesn't end well.
And I'm considering changing my name to "Rifle Butt FTW"
Everyone lolz when you get a butt kill.
If a starting skulk has 70 hp and 10 armor, it would still take 7 shots to kill him, 6 shots leaving him at 5 hp.
