UWE's strategy against hackers or skilled players who don't hack?
Is there any strategy to stop hackers or good players? One good hacker or skilled player on Marines could easily win the game for them... I think UWE needs to put in handicaps for good players or hackers. If they get 10:1 KDR, they need to lower their health by 1 point per kill they make. So a player with 99 kills only gets 1 health out of 1. That would level the playing field easily, right?

UWE is uploading to VAC a list of hacks. Granted, I have a low opinion of VAC (seriously, anyone who plays TF2 should. VAC stops hacks like Congress responsibly spends money), but it's SOMETHING.

Now if they could only enact a limited ROF for pistols. And do something about the shotgun autoscript.

As for skill nefs, can't agree. But people who are ridiculously good should be playing on servers of their own skill level. Or they're just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s.

That's a bit harsh, but your point is coming through.
A better idea would be to have marine classes, as the problem stems alittle from, all marines can do anything.

So, no more flying around with shotguns killing everybody. (it's simply not fun getting one hit by something mid-tier, mid-air) As a thread pointed out, siege weapons could give increased bodyarmour. (flamethrowers,
Jetpacks could be used as a "you can only fly with light equipment(As a class, although, you don't start with the jetpack, of course)"

Or simply the easiest solution, have it activated as a 4th or 5th weapon altogether. that would require the least amount of work. But right now, it seems marines are such a chore to play, unless you happen to have perfect aim.

JP should just be bumped to 20 res (or even 25). 10 res is way too cheap for something that incredibly useful. Mid to late game marines can buy a JP SG, go around killing things like crazy, die and then buy it all over again. The alien equvilent is a Fade and that's 40 more res to do the same thing twice. I do not think Fades should be dropped to 30 res (that would seriously unbalance the game).

JP can only be used with a rifle? That would be incredibly rough.

If you punish someone for being good. There's no incentive to get better.

As far as hackers. The only real strategy that works is active Admins on servers.

It's finitely better than having a handicap for being good. Maybe up the price of shotgun to 30 or 35, keep the siege weapons as is, they are harder to use.

Along with VAC a number of servers are employing the NS2bans mod. (ns2bans.com)

This is a community driven ban list to keep known hackers and mass griefers out of servers.

As for handicapping good players..... that's... well... really one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. What first person shooter game has ever done this?

I do agree that jetpacks could probably use a small jump in price.

I think on the Balance Mod Shotguns are now 25 res, and JP are 15 res, thus at least making it a bit harder (balanced?) for good players to gain a lot of advantage

Its not about making it harder to gain an advantage, its more about balancing the price of a powerful weapon to make it more worth keeping. And more worth getting rid of. If you lost 40 res everytime you died as a JPSG, you'd pay a lot more attention to it. Plus you go from being able to do it 3 times in a row with 100 res to 2 times in a row. Similar to the Fade, which is the heavy hitter of the Alien team as far as actually killing things goes.

40 for a JPSG seems far more balanced then it does right now. Also, the high cost of a Fade more or less forces them to work with other aliens. A JPSG can in many ways go solo. Upping JPSG to 40 would decrease the Lone Wolf tactics as it's more expensive to risk losing that outfit. That said, not sure I agree with a 25 res shotty, but that would slow down the early shotgun rush.

Indeed! Throwing out individual handicaps, for example by overall K/D ratio, would be total nonsense. No other FPS I can think of has something like that in its basic settings. Even a ranking system, putting together players of the same skill level, is kind of risky in a game like NS2.

I consider myself just a mediocre player at most when it comes to aiming capability. But when I happen to be in a squad with good teamwork, I can shine since I'm not the only target and can take my time to line up the shots. Teamwork or a lack of such can mess up the ranking system pretty bad. Even more in NS2 then in other team based FPS.

Furthermore, who will teach the learn willing rookies all the necessary things, they'll need to be of actual use in this game. We all know NS2 got a pretty step learning curve. ;)

I would definetly sign for the price nerf of shotguns and jetpacks though. Even now, I could bite myself in the butt, when I loose the second SGJP combo in a row to a lucky skulk ambush. But hey, just wait a few minutes running and gunning with your rifle and you are back in business. Losing a fade, on the other hand, makes you want to tear your keyboard apart.

I will simply say the game is fine as it is, the only thing that needs to be worked on is a real training ground for people who need to practise the balance in this game is superb it realy is, the trouble is the player base i.e the rookies that join and refuse to listen to there vet's or commands or team mates.

It would be nice if like the green rookie names you could also add one for "assistant" so that your name would be blue or something so they know if they need help they should listen to you,
OR a certain badge for the people who are either way into 500 hours or have been playing since alpha/ns2 - vet ns1.

There has been to many so many times that the game goes south because of people not listening this game is a rare game where teamplay actually matters.
Worst thing is I have had 5-6 people on my team before who were not listening and just running around aimlessly dying non stop and when I picked them up on it this one guy comes along and gives a classic reply "Let them do what they want no one should have to listen to orders its just a game".....yes its just a game but orders and commanding for team play is exactly what this game is built on..I really dont get the player base recently.

Hrm. I forgot about the infamous shotty rush. That would stink if it went away. Maybe just upping JPs to 20 res? It sounds a little steep, but maybe that's just because I'm used to them being 10.

No and unknown worlds doesn't care to stop hackers. I have an email from the CEO saying they don't care about hackers ie: they don't care about us.

Good marines literally can ruin a server. I played wolfenstein enemy territory for 8 years. As for top skill tier I was "low-" in ET but I could compete against "mid+". I've played on servers where I've seen higher tiered players get banned and I found it extremely idiotic. People who have only played it for maybe 2 or 3 years and were actually good at FPS games could compete against me. This game requires a completely different set of skills for learning how to shoot. This drives me to play aliens most of the time because shooting tiny unbeleivable fast things is quite discouraging and not fun. If the community for this game wants average players or people new to NS happy. Then the modding community needs to make a pub mod. A fair pub mod that doesn't handicap skilled players but doesn't make them unstoppable killing machines.
Calego, Elf-Friend May 2, 2013 @ 5:52pm
The insanely good players are rather annoying when they join rookie servers for the sake of stomping rookies. On non-rookie friendly servers though, its open territory.

I don't get what you mean by pub mod. What would that entail?
There is a combat mod, which is quite large and popular. It helps getting the whole combat section of NS2 down for sure.
