i have a 6 gb of ram pc with a AMD A8-3800 cpu a radon hd 6550 graphics card and a 1440 by 900 monitor
can you tell me the perfect setting to get 30 frames per second or so and a recomended resoulution for me

Turn ambient occlusion OFF and also turn shadows OFF. I find that turning the shadows off gives me an extra 10-20 fps. I'd always recommend running in your native resolution unless you have serious performance issues. Type "fps" into the console to display your current framerate on the HUD!

Is your CPU running at 2.4Ghz? You'd definitely want something more powerful, or consider overclocking.

Yes, manually increasing the frequency of your processor cores, giving your CPU a bit more power and increase overall performance. Read up on it online.

I'm considering OC'ing my AMD Phenom II 965 (Black Edition) from 3.4Ghz up to 3.8.

1st gen APU? I'd rather not try...
NS2 is pretty demanding, there is no way around it.

You don't need any more RAM, that's a fact. 6GB is more than enough. Also is your PC a laptop?

Usually I'd advise you to focus on the processor, since NS2 is very CPU heavy - but that graphics card you currently have is rather shocking, no offence :)
It's unfortunate, but people that want to play this game with a decent framerate are going to have to upgrade from old hardware.

Easiest thing to do is lower your resolution. I'd start with 1280x800 with everything off except multicore to see how well it plays. Adjust from there with lower resolution if necessary.

Type "FPS" into console to get your FPS displayed. Also "R_stats 1" for more detail.
