Buyer Beware
As someone who used to play Natural Selection 2 I suggest that you stay away from it. Here is why.

The Good: The base idea in itself is great. There is really no other game like it.

The Bad: Ever since June the development team has only listened to the extremely small and vocal forum community. The competitive/forum community has always wanted the aliens weakened and the game more complex. The problem from day 1 is that the game has always done a poor job at introducing new players to the gameplay mechanics. The gameplay is unique and complex so the game has always had a poor retention rate.

The competitive/forum community's demands have ruined the atmosphere of the game. It used to be so fun playing on both sides. Aliens were the dominant stealth team. Humans were the dominant raw firepower team. Now aliens are bogged down by low stamina and low maneuverability. The aliens' assassin class (Fade) went from being a night terror to Walter White's cancer from Breaking Bad. The game went from being a super tense game of wits to a typical blast 'em up game.

The Ugly: The development team has dropped all gameplay collaboration between any community. There is a thread[forums.unknownworlds.com] on their official forums 19 pages long complaining about the new alien vision. This thread was started back at the end of August. The dev team finally responded to the topic at the end of November. That's a quarter year delay for a simple response to a massive gameplay change.

The dev team has gone completely rogue and continues to make game even worse and worse. There is a reason why this game is 90% off while only being 1 year old.

Yeah i've been lurking this forum since this went on -90% sale and it really looks bad. Its like the devs went full desperado mode to get some cash before it dies

You like tremulous but wont pay 2.50 for this? Thats laughable dude. Most people pay more for a cup of coffee. OP is obviously butthurt that this is no longer his perfect vision of a game. Fine we all have our opinions. But at 2.50 its steal

I haven't played this game in like 8 months, what have they done to it while I was gone lol?

Is the op correct though?
DOes the vocal minority get it's way interms of development of the game?

OP are you perhaps mad b.c this game didn't go down the path you wanted it to go? Maybe you ever thought the world doesn't revolve around you and their are a life after all of this?
Hobocop Dec 2, 2013 @ 9:54pm
You know...maybe the reasons aliens have been nerfed is because they were OP? You really think being able to just mass fades every single game and win was balanced? You think being able to indefinitely hold off marine assaults with whips, crag heal wave and mucuous membrane spam was balanced? You think aliens being able to place gorge tunnels anywhere on the map including locations that were 100% inaccessible to marines without jetpacks before marines even have a chance to effectively gain access to the counters to those locations, and therefore essentially gain complete map dominance within two minutes of the game starting was balanced? Please.

Perhaps they've gone too far with the nerfbat on the Fade, but claiming that aliens have had low maneuverability at any point in time as a whole is just laughable. There have been low points...like brick skulks of Gorgeous yore, but for the most part, the alien team has always been more mobile than the marines for the vast majority of the game's lifespan.

There's also upcoming official alien vision options based on the Minimal Alien Vision mod on the workshop so that people can choose what they want in terms of alien vision, since the devs couldn't really find any other way to make all parties happy, so the best solution was to just add more options.

I think it very much depends on where you're coming from. As a veteran of the game I get where he's coming from... but at the same time I think if you're coming to the game as a new player, the changes made over the years wouldn't even register as something weird or problematic.

The alien vision mode for instance, it's completely functional and looks good in it's current form. Changing it was not necessary though. I don't think a lot of the changes has been necessary but they also didn't "break" the game.

A new player not having the baggage of what NS2 once was would probably just enjoy it for what it actually is instead.

As a guy who follows fighting games I feel I have to tell/remind people NOT to listen to every person who says "these nerfs/buffs ruined the game!".

It's a great game but requires some time to really understand the mechanics. If you like the looks of the game, buy it because at it's current price you will have fun with it! It will certainly help the developers out considering how a 90% discount looks for them.

I think the reason the hardcore players have the most say is because of a few things. There's a learnign curve so why implement big changes for players who are going to go on to some other game in 2 weeks? The hardcore players are keeping the game alive and now that NS2 is having a World Championship they're definitely the biggest influence. Reinforcement (the most recent big update and also donation program to recoup the costs of patch development) didn't turn out so well, from how I see it. They were asking for $550,000 to cover the costs of the patch, which when introduced crippled the game on some high end systems (went from playable to completely unplayable on my system until they released a minor patch), and appears to have fallen far short of their goal. Last I saw it was around $200,000 and they did say they needed it to continue development on the game. There hasn't been much since Reinforcement so I'm pretty sure major development on NS2 is over. I wouldn't be surprised to see it come up in a Humble Bundle or the like soon. I think we'll only see competition level changes from here on out.

Maybe the patches leveled the playing field to a degree but I feel like they end up with a "fatality" kind of thing now. There's no coming back once aliens have Xeno + Stomp.

PS. Hobocop, you might want to check slander again. I think you made a big herp a derp if you're going to be throwing that around.

It's easier to pick out enemies using your regular vision than it is to use alien vision. The new alien vision only makes the entire screen a sea of orange. Marines effectively gain camo by blending into the background with it on.

Won't disagree. I don't use the default activated alien vision at all.

However, they are going to be adding a minimal option into the game that's going to make it very similar to the Minimal Alien Vision mod on the workshop, and until that arrives, that's the mod I've been using on the servers that allow it, because it's flat out better in pretty much every single way compared to the current default both from an aesthetic and a functional standpoint.

I'm not saying it was a great change, just that if you're a new player coming in fresh to NS2... it wouldn't be a problem. The aliens still have a clear advantage when it comes tracking targets and seeing in the dark.

I don't think any of the major changes made to the game since launch justifies "buyer beware" is what I'm saying. Just looking at it in it's current form, not bringing in anything else, it's still a great game and well worth a purchase (especially at the sale price).
