Just bought the game and it looks awesome, but why are there so few players?
Everything is in the title

Very steep learning curve and most new players usually get discourged. If you just listen to the commander and other players about whats going on in the game you'll improve much faster. Most players (including myself) are willing to help new players so make sure to ask questions because there's a lot to learn. Make sure to give it chance than just a couple games and expect to be pretty bad at first but everyone is at first so just have fun with it :). You can add me if you need someone to play with and if you need some help getting started. Hopefully I'll see you on the battlefield.

Okay, thanks. I will try to learn as fast as I can, not to be a burden to the team. The humans seem easy to play, but aliens are very confusing for me...

If you're patient. You can try and join an empty server and wait for a while. I've tried a few times and one time of them it worked.

It is best to start as Marines, shooting stuff is pretty straightforward. After fighting against alien tactics you will start to understand them, and you can look at some of the guides on here to help you along.

Thanks, I started to understand and even enjoy playing the aliens... And even though there aren't very many people playing, I can find plenty of servers to play in, so it seems that the small number is not such a big problem.

And the game is so complex and fun, love it. I just had no idea why not more people play it, being so unique.

I think it stems from the fact that this game was a mod back in the day and was based off another quake 2 mod (Gloom). Those communities were very tight and were played by many players for years. BUT in the grand scheme of things they were just small mod communities compared to the rest of the people who purchased Half Life or Quake 2.

There is probably a smaller population of people who enjoy this style of gameplay, so as a stand alone it might just be too much for the average player, while die hards are in love with the game.

Just my thoughts on the whole thing. The is fantastic though and deserves more players.

If you check the developer's forums, you will see many regulars there, and have been supporting the game since its inception. This game some how seems to attrack more mature gamers (they are willing to help rookies for the most part - you need to ask though). And they are hardcore at generating content and stuff for this game. Alot of the manual / wiki / new models / some bug fixes are done by community members who love the game. Considering there might be around a few thousand players active at the moment, this makes it all the more amazing. The Developers deserve a mention as well. They definately made this out of love first and money second, as they are still pouring effort in the game. I feel bigger studios would have abandoned this for the small player base, and go work on something else. But they have catered to their fans, and are working on fixes, performance and other bugs.
Anyway, welcome to NS2. If you see me online, please say hi.

Lots of problems but the hardware fanbois of the game will defend it to the end, so if the developers listen to them it'll end up being nowhere.

Heh, no fan will dispute the hardware requirements and performance issues, but all too often you get people ♥♥♥♥♥ing about performance that when they finally post spec's don't even meet the minimums.

There are a lot of people playing, try to join a server that is half full and it will fill up quickly.

Urghhh, so many people wondering why they couldn't even run the game when most of them had Intel graphic chips or equivalent.
