New CPU - So happy!
Hey guys, just got my PC parts yesterday, got home from work at 10pm and started building through the night. Got an Intel i5 4670K @ 4.2GHz and finally have a 1080p monitor. Cranked up all the settings and just finished my first game, runs so smooth compared to my old AMD system!

Did a benchmark with fraps, after 20 mins of gameplay (early game and late game included) my average fps was 81.104

Could not be happier, I can finally enjoy NS2!

I want to thank everyone who helped me in my previous thread recommending what CPU would be the better option.

Going to get a new PC, but how would an Intel 3.4 GHz "Haswell" Xeon E3-12xx v3 do?

Let's just say prepare yourself for having your gpu as bottleneck in most cases.

Congrats! I envy your being able to play NS2 well... until I get the chance to upgrade, I'm stuck on 800x600 and a framerate that means I perform less than optimal - it really doesn't do the game justice.

800x480 is a surprisingly well working resolution as well and should improve your frame rate by a good amount.

Moving up to 1920x1080 from 1280x1024 dropped my overall fps down by about 30, madness!

Which GPUs you guys have?

AMD HD 7850 2GB Overclocked to 1GHz - Nothing fancy.

With a GTX 760 and a Phenom II the GPU is still the bottleneck at max settings and it's always above 60fps.

Dont even bother with a xeon...

Also why get xeon if you can get a 4650/3570 around same price?

Xeon has HT.

Xeon has HT..

3470 has HT, is cheaper.

3570K hs HT, is OCable, and is only 10 dollars more.

Now which oen would you pick?

WOuld you rather be able to OC later when needed or will you still say: "I got Xeon... but it wont play some games" later anymore.

Then you may as well go for the cheaper 3470...

Heck, Even a 3335p will perform equaliy, and its what, 50 dollars less..

You wont have an upgrade path for either. Both socked 1155. You do really want to get an I5 4670 for only 10 more..

Get this mobo. You will be much more future proofed because you can upgrade later.

And if you wanna OC it you will pay only 50 more for the K mode and this board..

Xeon may work for NS2, but no ups anymore tbh. Just not worth it if you can get an I5 3570k...

Yeah that's true, for now. But PS4 and Xbox One have 8 cores so maybe PC games will start to use more cores/threads too. So it might help in future.
Anyway Xeon is nice choice if you aren't going to OC and if you don't need iGPU.
For instance E3-1240v3 is almost same as i7-4770. It just has 100MHz lower turbo clock and doesn't have iGPU. Well it also has ECC and 4W lower TDP. And it's MSRP is like $40 lower.

Thats a common mistake you made with the assumption that consoles hav 8 cores. That does not mean its equal to PC hardware :P
