You can run it on a Mac, but you'll need a Virtual Machine or a dual boot

The short answer is SteamOS is Linux and Steam Machines are going to be running SteamOS.

Yeah, SteamOS is based off of Linux, it isn't completely Linux, because they have gameplay of Borderlands 2 on the Steam Machine. I am really excited for the Steam Machine, its gonna be awesome

Steam OS is 100% Linux. What you have seen in regards to Borderlands 2 is Steam's "In Home Streaming" being demonstrated. As OuchOfDeath stated, Steam OS is Debian.

Don't feel so bad. Even though it is available for Linux, it does not run on Linux :)

What he said. I haven't been able to run this game, ever, and I own it for several months now. :P So, it's technically NOT ON LINUX either.

Well it doesn't run on pc that well either unless you have a good overclocked cpu:P.

Or just a higher end i5/i7.

Also playing on huge servers is a bad idea. I get between 70 and 130 FPS on 24 player servers, but I tried a 40 player game and I was down to 35 FPS. Yikes. I can't imagine what people on weaker CPUs were getting then if my i5 4670k was struggling at 35 FPS.

I never had problems running this game on Linux.

This does RUN in linux. I have an Ubuntu 14.04 lts setup. The problem is that it doesn't run well, as it is probably a wrapper-port, and not running native.
