FPS problem
I think this has been already discussed but i cant find anything usefull, can someone please explain some steps to improve in-game FPS? I tried some steps like decreasing quality and using nvidia high performance, still the max i get is around 20 fps, a lot of people have this problem and other people play with 40 50 fps, my pc can handle massive games so i dont think its the processor. Any sugetions?

Regardless of what you think about your computer specs you should at least be posting them because we have no information to start from.

this is actually the first game i had problems with frame rate i dont really know what to do

I'm not a tech wizz but that intel CPU seems pretty low at 2.00Ghz, my i3 clocks in at 3k.

I get about 40 fps late game on 24 player servers.

Edit: No secret that this game runs like ♥♥♥.

The best way to improve framerte in my experience are to turn off atmospherics and shadows. If you're still struggling turn alien infestation down to 'low'.

For comparison I'm running an AMD FX6300 processor, 8GB RAM and a Geforce GTX 560. If I turn on all the graphics settings I get bout 35fps max at 1080p. If I turn off shadows and atmospherics I get from 50 to 60 fps (probably more but I have vsync enabled which caps at 60).

Yeah his CPU it very far behind. Strange, because right now CPUs are advanced far beyond GPUs. Might wanna look into that OP.

edit: Just because a CPU is an i7 does not mean it is good for gaming. I have not kept up with the latest and greatest, largely because it doesn't matter with the current state of technology.

He has a laptop CPU. That's the reason for his FPS drops. It is the processor.

Its a very cpu heavy game.

if i can play bioshock, metro last light, skyrim, and all that sort of games with no dificulty, considering my pc meets the recommended requirements of NS2, i seriously doubt its because my pc is old and outdated, natural selection 2 has been release for some time now and i didnt had much problems at the begining.

That i7 should still be able to run at 2.9ghz, you can go control panel->power options and select the high performance, just to make sure its not running in some power saving mode.

Bioshock, Metro, Skyrim are all GPU intense games, not CPU. Since you are running on a laptop, there are an infinite number of things that could be the problem. As stated before, check power settings, if set wrong it can decrease performance by 60 percent or more.

I dont think you know what you are talking about

i have the game running with the GPU: GeForce GT 540M instead the
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz, based on your previous comment the game runs better on intel or should i still use nvidia? sry i dont know much about pc, i may be saying something stupid

Use the correct driver.

2GHz is the correct frequency for your CPU. 2.9GHz is the max 'turbo mode' frequency, the CPU will only use this in short bursts. Despite what some people here are telling you, the performance of a CPU is dictated by a lot more than just its clock rate. Ancient Pentium 4 processors (for example,) had clock speeds over 3GHz but your processor is extremely more powerful than any Pentium 4.

Your CPU comes with built in Intel HD 3000 graphics. This is a low power graphics processor. It should only be used for your desktop and watching videos, things like that. Do not use it for gaming.

Your main GPU is the GeForce GT 540M, use this for gaming. Your driver should really be automatically be picking the best GPU to use for the situation. Make sure you have the latest available graphics driver installed. You can download them from here:
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx

There are other things you can do to improve performance.

Follow this guide to set your CPU to 'performance' mode instead of 'power save' or 'balance':

Follow this guide to disable compositing and desktop effects for Natural Selection 2:

Other than that, all you can do is try turning down the in-game graphic settings. Getting good frame rates in other games doesn't mean you'll get good frame rates in NS2. The Spark engine which NS2 runs on is not very well optimized and makes virtually no use of multiple CPU cores. Your CPU has 4 cores (though device manager might say 8 because of HyperThreading,) which means Natural Selection 2 can only make use of a quarter of your CPU at best.

Im Not sure if this was already stated but Ur CPU isnt up to the chops. Furthermore, your GPU isnt either. Natural Selection 2 doesnt seem like it would be a demanding game but it really is. My pc runs bf3 and mostly bf4 better then NS2. It really only uses 1 core maybe 2 max so it isnt what you would call multithreaded. I have a 7950 overclocked to 1.2ghz with 8GB of ram and a 8320 overclocked to 4.6. During the game my framerate is anywhere from 45 to 190fps and the gpu load is around 60%. The game is majorly bottlenecked without a sandybridge or up cpu. I cant play this without an overclocked amd cpu. It drops to 45 when everyones exploding all around and hell breaks loose (every 5 min). Your best bet if you want to play this amazing game would be to get an i3 sandybridge+ and a 7750+ and with any luck, because the per core performance of an i3. you will be able to match my system with better minimums but lower maximum for a better balanced system for this game. 60/80fps.

These people speak the truth and I know its painful to hear but this was/is an inevitable consequence of a gaming laptop. They age at the same pace but you cant upgrade them like a desktop. I and others on this forum have plenty experience building computers and I have over 500hrs playing NS2. We know what this game takes to run.

There is still hope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a mod under the Natural Selection 2 Workshop that is made for computers like yours. It reduces the CPU overhead as well as the GPU and may help you out a lot. Its at the expense of how the game looks unfortunatly.
