Massive FPS Drop
I remember when I got this computer roughly 8 months ago, with Windows 7. I was playing NS2 on high settings at 80-100 fps. Now I'm running at a measly 30-60 with the same settings. The only difference that has happened in my PC during that time period was a new hard drive, and an upgrade to Windows 8.1 I don't know what the hell happened, does anybody know what could have happened?

Possibly the Windows 8.1 thing.
It's kind of like with the Windows 7 and XP compatibility thing.
Some games worked better with Windows XP and worse on 7.

Of course there are people on here who say they run fine with Windows 8, but i'm not sure.

The optimization definitely didn't get worse, got better in-fact.

Strange, I don't know what could have possibly happened.
-> turn off ambient occlusion for an extra 10-15fps (its not needed)
-> make sure your vertical sync is tripple buffered so theres no fps cap
-> apply your own 80fps cap so your video card doesn't work to hard (maxfps 80 in console)
-> windows 8.1 has nothing to do with this
-> trying using direct x 11 (seems to be better perfromance atleast for myself)
-> type r_stats in console and see if your waiting for your gpu or a thread

could you provide more info such as how many players the server had etc? anything above 24 players is going to have those drops easily.

I remember I was playing on full servers, to get the most out of the game.

when you say "full", how many players are we talking?

are your checking your fps properly via the r_stats command (not from main menu)?

also, could you please post your computer specs for a better idea of what were dealing with here?

About 22 or 24. And I'm checking fps via the main menu. Here are the basic specs:
AMD Fx 6350 6-Core Processor @ 3.9 GHz
Gtx 650 Ti
1 TB Hard Drive
8 Gigs of Ram
Windows 8.1
ok, the gtx 650 ti isn't quite strong enough to handle all max settings BUT if you turn off ambient occlusion (which is just glowly things pretty much) you should be good.

i'm currently running an overclocked build more powerful than yours, and it still isn't enough to handle that ambient occlusion. same issue as you only my figures were 15fps higher to start off with. (dropping down to 45fps) i gained anther 15fps by disabling ambient occlusion (and keeping everything else maxed out) which brings my drops up to 60fps.

to clarify the "80-100 fps". thoose have to be stats from within the ready room or during the first few minutes of the game. as the game progesses your fps will start to drop. i personally got 100-120fps in the ready room/game start. its really not something to think much of.

my specs
amd fx 8530 @ 4.4ghz
r9 270x @ 1151hmz core 1414mhz mem
raid 0 stripe 128gb SSD x2
8gb of ram
windows 8.1

see here for a comparision.
- atleast 35% stronger than yours and still doesn't peform well with ambient occlusion.
