I dont know of any servers that require rank. The game is mainly for fun.

Ranks don't fit the game. This isn't how NS2 works.

It's sad how Skinner boxes have become games themselves. If you're after a little number that means nothing this game isn't for you

I dislike the ELO system as it kicks me from certain servers either as my level is to high or low

i dont think a ranking system like halo or cod fits ns2. but i'd love to see if they make a working player stats tracker or some steam achievements for people to show off.

Oh and add medals for every sh** i make. /sarcasm
Actually, i think ELO is enough, it is some kind of ranking already.

The ELO system is good and helps reduce pub stomping. It’s great that some servers are taking the initiative and kicking higher ranked players in order to help foster the growth of the NS2 community and let new players adjust to the game at their own pace. But there needs to be a column in the menu to show which ranks are allowed on a server so us higher ranked players know which servers to avoid before being kicked.

At the moment the ELO system is a community mod, so afaik there's no way it can be placed in the server list without UWE's involvement.

As for getting removed from servers, as Oh Noes stated that's for everyones benifit. It's no fun to get endlessly curbstomped as a rookie, and if you do get enjoyment out of doing the curbstomping, well I wouldn't want you on the server anyway ;)

I can't speak for other server's, but I volunteer admin on KKG's cluster, where there are two Rookie Only servers. The plugin prevents players with 75 plus hours logged in NS2Stats or Hive from joining the game. It's not perfect and possible to slip through, and in that case based on profile plays we just ban the pubstompers.

There are then 3 Rookie Free servers where the opposite is true. Less then 75 hours logged and you can't join a team, for the same reasons. They are put in place for vets to play with typicaly other skilled players. Again not perfect, but as close as we can get at the moment.

Finally there are 3 Rookie Friendly servers where the only restriction is a player with less then 10 hours logged in NS2Stats or Hive cannot command.

The issue for me is that there are times when the only servers that have open spots are servers that that seem to have very low elo rankings. And thus I end up playing tf2 or sc2 instead as I can't get a spot on a server that doesn't kick me.

Please no ranking system.

That's fine for certain games, but I like playing NS2 because I want to play, not because I want to progress in it somehow.

I just don't want to know how horrible I am at this game.

Gameplay should be paramount in the eyes of the player, you shouldn't need constant unlocks and validation from the game in the form of 'prestige' ranks to keep you entertained while playing a videogame.

Countless players logged endless hours into games like counter-strike before any semblance of a ranking system existed in fps games. The reason? Because the game was fun and they enjoyed playing it.

I have almost 900 hours played in NS2 and I still play it because I enjoy the game, not because I want to unlock a skin for my LMG or get to prestige 25.
