Rookies: How to avoid the hate
There's a few basic things you can do to avoid getting hate from veteran players:

Listen and acknowledge. Yes, you're terrible at the game compared to them (and everyone was at some point), but that isn't why 99% of the time people will get angry at you.

It's inability or refusal to listen. Remember your names. Take the suggestions. If you're commanding (which you probably should not do) acknowlege and communicate. What drives veteran players ape*hit is when new players treat the game as death match with no regard for the team based nature. No one expects you to know everything, but asking questions and listening and acknowledging will deter 99% of flaming rookies get.

Here's a rookie guide I wrote a while ago to help out brand new players:

You're welcome.

Basic communication is huge in this game. I've seen commanders who frankly had no business getting anywhere near the chair not get a vote to eject them started because they were communicating. They were asking questions what to do, where to place things and what items did. And I've seen mediocre commanders who never said or typed anything get ejected within 5 minutes.

You don't need a mic (but it helps), but you gotta communicate.

THIS! I was just commanding a game, and no-one responded to my way points, sometimes didnt build stuff. Ignored both typed and voice messages. I was not sure if I was playing with real people or some sort of bot mod. Untill another more advanced player became angry. After 3 minutes of him complaining, 1 rookie out of 8 finally said something: "Stop the whining". That was the moment I stepped out of the commchair and left for a non-rookie server.

There is no problem in being new and a bad player, but please respond (you don't have to follow orders to the letter, but it would be nice) or at least show that you are somehow human!

Also know that this game is like Starcraft, extremely hard to get into and extremely hard to master. Do not jump into this game expecting to do well, you will struggle to get kills, you will struggle to get a good K/D. This does not matter in the grand scheme. What matters is what you do for your team.

I own the server Rookies Paradise. Anyone wishing to learn or have a good time, just add me on Steam and try to play on my server. I'm more than willing to help you out and tell you what I know about the game.

i'm hundred percent with this guy. communication is the key. couple of years ago when the game had 1000+ players all the time, when there were lots of good players with 1000+ hours at least, people used to get ejected from the comm chair cuz they don't have a mic. as someone said here, having mic is not mandatory but i wanted to point out how important communication is in this game.
in my case, when the commander doesn't have a mic, but he can type, I'm fine with that. since i use a mic, i basically tells other players what commander is typing(since most people don't read chat)

speaking of helping the commander, it's not a good idea to have 2 or 3 commanders giving orders in a team. so even though i'm much more experienced than our commander, i don't argue with him, i don't disagree with him. even if i'm 100% sure the comander is wrong, i just do it. cuz in this game, teamwork make impossible, possible.

you get down to 0 RT(that means no money source), and yet your team manage to take the entire map gradually. i don't see this happening in any other game, cuz most games out there don't require teamwork. not as much as this game.

Communication is sometimes the best part of this game.. really gives a sense of teamwork beyond almost any game i've played.
