==Welcome newcomers, read this before getting into the game==
--this game is a RTS game with FPS element, if you think this game the other way around, you will not have fun and will delete the game before 10 hour mark.

--this game is team based game. good players always try to contribute to the team. KDR is merely the result of it.

--you will get killed a lot. but that doesn't matter. i've been playing this game for over 2000hours and still get killed a lot. but the difference between people hate this game and i is that i don't care when i die as long as that death did good on my team(it rather feels exciting if i took out the enemie's ctirical structure). those that hate the game hate the game cuz they don't care about the team. they don't care about strategy.

if you understand these 3, i can guarantee you that you will never be bored playing this game, but rather get addicted to it like myself. and also, you can disregard all those people complaining like

'other players being a ♥♥♥♥',
'top players just chopping off newbies, thus the game being boring',

and so on cuz you won't go through those experiences.

here's a small tip for bonus, you wanna try playing for marines until you understand what NS2 is, and then move onto alien team since playing as alien need a lot more comprehension to the game. marine gameplay is comparably easier too.

hope you guys like this game, and have fun until you reach the level where you cannot get better due to lag compensation mechanism XD

I fired up a server for all new players: "The REAL! rookie/low skill server"
Its skill and time restricted, so new players can learn the game in peace without getting stomped by the vets.

And a small tip to all new players: DONT play on the 42 slot wooza server. The game isnt made/balanced for this ammount of players.
You will have bad performance and no balance there.

For the Newcomers I recommend the above advice and add
Read the NS2 Wiki[wiki.unknownworlds.com]
Go over some Game Guides[unknownworlds.com]

NOT the most recommended advice
play the Combat mod, the RTS element is removed for the most part, but swapped with an RPG element. It's a good way to learn the marine upgrades, alien upgrades and alien evolutions as well as what is effective against what.

Gah. 40+ player servers are barely playable for me in the beginning and a total chopfest at the end. I get like 150-170 in lobby and rarely drop below 70 FPS end game, but I was seeing 20-35 FPS on a 42 player map.

Wrong.. This is an FPS game with RTS elements. Not the otherway.

you r right. however, the true way of enjoying this game is thinking of the game the other way around.

some people say this game is boring and too hard to play against other good players. that's becuz they don't understand the RTS aspect of the game and that's what i wanted to point out. though i top the scoreboard most of the time(KDR wise), i enjoy the game as RTS game and that's how most people i know whom are expert at this game play the game.
for example, most good players never say no when commander ask them to be somewhere or do something. they don't always solo and focus on KDR. i rarely saw a good player not trying to contribute to the team but rather enjoy the game for himself. that's how this game has so many oldbies with years of experience of the game.
ask any oldbies, the first thing rookies should get used to is to hold C all the time.
There's no RTS aspect for a marine unless you call watching the minimap for red dots a rts aspect.

The only advice you should give to the FPS marines is to look around... everywhere.

Following comm's orders does not make it rts.

Please don't go off-topic, this thread must remain a lightpost for new players to tell them which servers to avoid and how to get into the game without being utterly crushed :)

Good post. Especially the part about RTS vs FPS. You can't win matches in this game by just being a good twitch shooter. That's certainly part of it, but the team needs resources, and good teamplay tends to produce better results than running off solo.

As a new player myself with proabably less than 20 hours..be wary as they are rude gamers that swear and use harassing remarks. I already reported 2 people for these actions on different servers. Not all servers have rude and ugly people, some are quite nice, but don't hesitate to report to steam these bad people..and i also suggest that a young child should not listen to mic usage in this game either..
Kerfuffle Jun 22 @ 10:07am
It might be helpful to also say this:
People are reguarlly very nice, until you don't respond/ignore orders. Then the fire normally starts. Even if you suck/disagree with what is being asked, try it anyways -- and not five mintues later either!

people get p1ssed off at rookies cuz some rookies don't help out the team rather just do random stuffs that they wanna do. i don't mind playing /helping out rookies but not listening to ur team and not working as a team has nothing to do with being a rookie. it's just pure retardation.
like today, i was playing as alien and we had a rookie comm. i was trying to help out but he never responded nor followed my instruction and the game ended within 5 min.
also when i was commander, i needed a skulk to kill a marine who's killing my harvester right next to him. i gave him orders several times, but he was just sitting there watching the rine killing my harvester. i don't usually give cold shoulders to those rookies but i don't blame people being a$$holes to them cuz it's just stupid. it has nothing to do with skills.

I agree with most warning with this game since I only got 19 hrs before giving up with this game I think 1 year ago. LOL

Another thing and why I gave up with this game is you need to be able to understanding many english accent over mic screaming order. Vary of who is commanding since some are easy to understand, but many are hard to translate while your in middle of fight and you don't have time to concentrate to try to translate.

It's only personnal opinion, but this gave me bad taste with this game and since it's aletory with whom you will play. Got this language barrier too frequently to my taste.

But the rest of the game play, are really well exception of the infinite loading time I had. ^^
