Download none/some/all?

I changed the option in the settings menu from "Download all custom files" to "Do not download anything", connected to a server, and it started downloading mods. Really obnoxious.

Is that 'normal'?

Yeah.. you need the mods that the server is running to join it...

It's ok most of them are just mods to tweak something or make life easier for admins...

Then there's NS2+ which gives you a bunch of additional options for customizing your controls and UI...

It's not a bad thing.

- Sure, and you need the map, too. So, if I set it to *not* download maps, it should block me from joining - hopefully with an explanatory message (as in most games), or perhaps an option dialog (like "Do you want to DL [thing] or disconnect?")

- Not as comforting as it sounds. I have a similar game where an admin for a few servers has loaded them up with plugins that break the game for me. I get your point, I assume, that these unrequested downloads are generally not malicious, but I'd rather know explicitly what the tweaks are. Also, I'd rather learn a game 'vanilla' before getting confused by why it works one way on some servers, but not others.

- Yeah, to me it is. It's a download that, AFAIC, I explicitly opted *not* to receive.

I know, though. It's not going to change, and it's not like it's your fault. Thanks for replying, and for confirming that this is expected behavior.

Well to but it short and simple enough, NS2+ contains several options:

Change certain or remove some of your own UI and HUD elements to add/remove visual obstructions.

You can swap your Alien vision to something more pleasent to the eyes or make your own thanks to another modder that got included into.

Hide viewmodels like your gun on marines or your mouth on aliens for less visual obstruction (if the server and it's owner has allowed and enabled this feature separatly.)

And a bunch of other small options that can boost FPS and performance overall, the mod also has some small fixes to some animations and other small polishments to the base game.
