While this game may not have the charm of M&B:Warband, it definitely scratches that itch to command an army of musket wielding troops and watch them pepper an army of idiot peasants trying to run screaming away from you.
The game itself is much like the rest of the series, start out with almost nothing but the weapons and a horse you are assigned by difficulty, then complete 'quests', join a faction and try to rule the world. A cast of semi interesting characters join you on your ride through fake history as you lay waste to the country-side.
The customizable troops you can get is a nice touch, and if you get enough cash (eventually you will via plunder or trade) you can effectively travel with an army of epic geared troops, slaughtering everything in your (or your lords) name.
Story? Bah who needs one in this style of game? Your story is the story, basically making it so you yourself get to design your own story by destroying army after army. Or die trying. And stuff.
Open world games are easy to get lost in, and while the graphics are dated (but being able to display 200+ troops in a FPS styled RTS is impressive in it's own right) there are worse things in life.
I strongly recommend this game for people who wish that M&B had muskets instead of crossbows, as while the story isn't a big leap, the combat definitely feels fresh. Skyrim this may not be, but in Skyrim you can't honestly lead 200+ troops around attacking people/villages at random or capture yourself a few castles without some serious modding.
Also look into the mods/DLC for this game if you like multiplayer, the community is pretty cool.
