Steam and retail different version numbers
We're trying to play a multiplayer game between my version just bought from Steam, the complete pack thing, and a retail base game that my friend has. My version has a version number ending in 7780 and my friend's game says 7792, so the game complains that we have different versions and so we can't play together. Both games basically just downloaded from Steam and Uplay yesterday. The autopatcher doesn't find anything and neither does anything else. How can we play together?

The "awesome" Ubisoft support suggested that my friend has to update his game (7792) even though my version number seems to be lower (7780). I guess Ubisoft counts version numbers backwards, wouldn't surprise really... And they suggested for us to do that by "uninstalling and reinstalling Uplay, as well as the game". The game was literally downloaded less than 12 hours ago, from a fresh installation of Uplay downloaded just before that. And so was the Steam game, downloaded from Steam at the same time.

Any suggestions? How hard can it be to play a simple multiplayer game between two copies of the same game bought from different places? The game is awesome of course, but the rest of this reminds me of why I stopped playing it.

I have had this issue before, and it is a massive pain. For some reason the version number from Steam is different from the version number from Uplay. The fix is to get the Anno5.exe (the game executable) file from one person and copy it to the other's computer in place of their Anno5.exe. As long as the first person is all 100% patched and updated this should work.

Found this out yesterday: I copied anno5.exe and autopatcher.exe, after which it started working. If I only copied anno5.exe, the autopatcher would re-download the file again, undoing the whole replacing. Therefore, I also had to replace the autopatcher.
