Can't play HOMM6

Whenever I press play on HoMM6, it opens up a launcher with the DLC background which I don't have, and when i press Play from there, I get an error. Why is that?

It's a bug if I'm understanding your post correctly. You mean when you click on the game icon in your Steam libary that a splash screen then immediately appears for Might & Magic VI: Heroes BEFORE Uplay has had time to open and sign in, which then causes the game to throw up a "Game already started" error message or some other nonsense? If you then check with Task Manager then you see the game is actually running but not active so you then have to manually force the game to exit?

If it is that then it's the exact same issue I had when I bought the game earlier on this year (or late last, I forget) and it caused much frustration because I was unable to play the game even if I ignored Steam and loaded Uplay and tried to launch the game from there. A few times the game would load normally, i.e. sign into Uplay first before displaying the Might & Magic VI: Heroes splash screen, but more often it wouldn't making it seem like a game of Russian Roulette or something. Very annoying. As such I stopped playing the game in the hope that a patch would fix it.

I don't think the game has been patched since (I might be wrong though) but the last few times I've loaded the game I was able to play with no problems so the issue may have been fixed for me via a Uplay update or maybe it has something to do with me now using Windows 8.1 Pro (upgraded from Windows 8 Pro)?

It was: I press play, splashscreen appears, goes to the Uplay window with HOMM SoD on the background which I don't even have. I pressed play and it gave me an error.
After a recent update, I pressed play and it went to a black screen. I've waited for 2 minutes and found that HOMM VI stopped responding, so its still a broken mess for me.
I'm using Windows 7 btw.
