Open Task Manager
Click the 2nd tab (Processes)
Find Might and Magic 6, click it
Click "end process"
...and try starting the game again. (Worked for me, hope it works for you.)
The way the game starts from Steam is odd though as I see a Might & Magic VI Heroes loading window pop up in the middle of the desktop THEN Uplay launches and signs in after synchronizing my saves with the cloud. The Game Already Started error window appears then when I click on OK to close it I get the usual Thank You For Playing window you see after exiting a game!!! Except I haven't been playing the game... I am trying to play it!!!!!!
The strange thing is that there is a process running called Might & Magic VI Shades of Darkness which using around 60 MB of memory and the loading window remains stuck in the middle of my desktop until I manually exit that process. The game never loads, no matter how long I wait. This issue also occurs when I launch Might & Magic VI directly from Uplay as well which suggests it is not an issue caused by Steam. Even before I bought the Shades of Darkness expansion though, my Uplay Games library displayed only a Might & Magic VI Shades of Darkness icon and not one for Might & Magic VI Heroes (which is what the loading window shows).
I find it absolutely ridiculous that these kind of issues occur and if I had to hazard a guess at its cause then I'd say it's the DRM or the shoddy Uplay launcher, which has the honour of actually being far worst than EA's Origin in my opinion; quite an achievement really given how bad that software is.
if it was me I would try remove uplay from add/remove programs and let steam reinstall it. if the prb is still there I would again remove it and reinstall from the uplay.com website and see if it gets better.
I really do want to uninstall/reinstall Uplay and risk losing the other 19 games and their save games as they all work perfectly fine. The majority of them are non-Steam retail disc games but Far Cry 3: Blood Dragons and From Dust seem to run fine from Steam. Nor do I want to uninstall Steam either when I have a library of 342 titles installed and all except one are working. The issue is evidentally with the game and/or Uplay not Steam anyway. As far as I can tell.
Yes, that's pretty much the same error I'm having. I've played the game for around an hour and it works flawlessly so I know it DOES run but it seems very random as to whether it will actually load or not. It's somewhat pathetic that issues like this get in the way of us enjoying our games.
Someone on another forum suggested that it may be a conflict between a background task and the game's DRM. I am running EVGA Precision X's on-screen display so disable it and see if that allows the game to start properly.
By the way, why does Uplay repeatedly prompt me to change my password at startup? I know they were hacked last week (again!!!) but I have already changed my password twice and even changed the email associated with my Uplay acount. Do I really have to keep changing the password. This message is uber-annoying because it prevents Uplay from otherwise signing in automatically like it used to.
you can launch uplay manually from there (make a shortcut on the desktop) :
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\Uplay.exe
remove x86 from program files folder name if you are not running a 64bits OS.
btw why the need to run uplay as admin ?
