Does this game have DRM beyond Steam?
I played and enjoyed SH3 quite a lot, didnt play SH4 much though - much preferred the German subs in teh Atlantic. Anyway I didnt get this game because of the Ubisoft constant online connection DRM. But Ive heard that it has since been removed.

So if I now buy this game on Steam does it require any other sort of DRM to work (other than Steam)? Does it require a constant internet connection?

And is it any good? I loved the way you could manage your crew in SH3- giving them medals and repairing sections of the boat etc. Does this game have anything like that in 2d screens (which were fun) or is it all done in 3d now?

Howe does this game compare to SH3?

I haven't played SH5 but SH4 is great especially with the U-Boat expansion. Give SH4 a try and get the Trigger Maru mod.

I used to have SH4 and sold it. Didnt like playing the US - boring. And there were too many bugs in moving around the boat etc. I preferred SH3 of all of them but I cant play that one anymore - played it too much. I would only bother getting SH5 if it was remarkable and better than Sh3 but it doesnt sound like it is from what I have read.

The simple answer to both your questions is "yes". The game installs something called "Uplay", which is a bit like Origin. It has to "phone home" when you first start it and you have to set up a separate account with them to get it to work. You can set it to offline mode, but it tends to ignore this as far as saves are concerned and saves them online anyway. Also, it will nag you if you try to play offline. Apparently there are security issues with Uplay as well, which I would advise you to investigate and deal with before you start the game.

The game itself is pretty good if you like that sort of thing. However, unless you're willing to deal with the rather annoying DRM I'd give it a miss.

I wouldn't call Uplay annoying. It's better than Origin as you get free things ingame (unlocks sort of like achievements).

For example if you do something in game, you get up to 10-40 points, which you can then use to redeem specific things ingame.

For SH5 the "unlocks" include a wallpaper, submarine skins, an ability to sink the Queen Mary, and something about the HMS Ark Royal.

Personally I'm waiting for hte game to go on sale and then I'll pick it up.

I dont think I will bother I hate invasive DRM systems and I have just bought Kerbal Space Program and ARMA2 Combined Operations and those two will keep me going for months if not longer! I dont think, with a family etc, I really have the time to get into sub games these days anyway - just not enough gaming time to play long missions anymore. My kids take most of my potential gaming time up playing Minecraft as well which doesnt help!
