The Sims 3 (Steam) + expansion packs (retail store)

Hello,

I bought The Sims 3 and a few expansion/stuff packs during the big sale event and now wanted to purchase a few more expansions/stuff packs. I wanted to know is it possible for The Sims 3 bought over steam to work together with expansion/stuff packs that is bought at retail stores?

If you have an account on http://www.thesims3.com/ it doubles as an Origin account, EA's "answer" to the Steam client. Registering your CD-keys on there will grant you the copies on Origin. You can register retail copies and digital copies with them but not Steam.

Essentially (as stated by Landeros) you'll have to download Origin and register your copy through that. Make an account, register (and once you do, you'll get a free world IIRC), and use the Origin/Sims Launcher client to download additional packs that are unavailable to Steam (because apparently EA thinks they can do better).

Although, I am looking forward to the 70's/80's/90's pack this Tuesday. Still lame though.

Just clarify this for me please as i have just bought sims 3 on steam.... If i were to buy an add on for this, say either on disc or direct download from somewhere other than steam I can still play this with the added content, it will just not show up in the steam launcher?

You would have to register your CD Key for the game from Steam over at sims3.com then redownload the game through Origin then the expansions should work through there. It won't work on the Steam version directly though.

What happens with your save games, when you switch to using Origin? I have sims and most of the expansion packs from Steam, but just got 70, 80 and 90's stuff on CD as a gift.

Kind of a hassle that you can't just register it with Steam, as with all the expansion packs it's huge, and is going to take a whole day to re-download through Origin.

I assume the reverse is true as well? If I Purchase the base game on origin, if I buy an expanstion on steam, I can register that cd key and it will work with the origin version?

I'd assume you still have them. Both Steam and Origin (and the disk versions) all save games in the same place. Just to be sure, though, I'd make a back-up of my important saves -- you should be able to find them under your Documents (wherever that is on your version of Windows), then /Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Saves/

it works but you have to buy a base game on steam so if say your going to get Pets on steam and there is a Pets + base game for only 5 bucks more get it. now start the install and stop it. right click on steam game and it will say CD key put the key for pets in origin and it will use the your retail version this works out great. now you got the base game really cheap for 5 bucks because you now take the base game cd key and register it with THe Sims 3. you get get 10 bucks worth of store credits. i did this a few years ago when they were onsale for 85% off and now i pick up during sale XP here and i just put the keys in origins. i have expansions for 4 different places.


Base Sims 3 retail and steam
Generations Late Night and world adventures retail
Ambentions Impulse(no idea why i bought it here)
Stuff packs all of them either from Steam or Origins
the rest of the Expansions are from Steam when onsale for less then 15 bucks each

i put of the Cd keys in Origins and use it to only download them it not set to run on start up since it doesn't have to for The Sims 3 to work.

I could do that but I don't really want to have to buy the base game again. If it's cheap like that though, I may try it sometime.
