It's a good RPG with a very rich story and some interesting locations, but there's also a good amount of things that aren't that great.
The presentation is flawless. The locations have a nice amount of detail and all feel unique. The music is great and the voice acting ranges from solid to excellent.
The story will drag you in and give you many choices. There is a lot of flavour text to read and you can easily spend a couple of hours just wading through optional dialogue. There are also weaker quests and predictable subplots, but overall the story is good.
Now to the not so good things: The combat system isn't bad, but you'll struggle with it quite often due to it being kind of delayed. Which in harder fights were every second counts can be very annoying. The game isn't overly hard, but there are fights that will really drain your patience because they aren't exactly well balanced.
Next problem is the design of especially the later dungeons in the game. They are just stretched out way too much and filled with pointless time and resource consuming fights. In combination with the subpar combat system it's tedious to push through them.
Lastly I have to say that the setting couldn't be more generic. There's nothing in this game that you haven't seen before (maybe except for some demons), but overall it feels like the team had a lot of ideas about the story, but none about the background. This is just a minor complaint though.
I recommend the game, but mainly if you enjoy the story in a game more than actual gameplay.
Edit: I just finished the expansion (The Awakening) and found it important to add a few lines about it as well. One complain about the main game was that it wasn't original enough in terms of setting and I have to say that this expansion really does a good job at correcting that mistake. It's nowhere as obvious what's going on as in the main game and there are unique non-human villains this time. Also due to the shorter nature of the expansion the dungeons don't drag as much as in the main game. I really enjoyed the expansion and would even go as far as saying that it's slightly better than the main game. This is more about the overall gameplay and not about the story. If you want to play the game you should really get the ultimate edition to get the full experience.
