So in 2009, Bioware decided to return to its roots of making RPGs in the vein of Baldur's Gate with Dragon Age: Origins. What resulted is a very engaging and thrilling tale of a band of misfits that come together to defeat the evil Darkspawn and their leader, the Archdemon. I wholeheartedly can recommend it.
The story of Dragon Age is a pretty good one, with a good mix of political intrigue and dark fantasy themes. There is some really expansive lore in this game available for you to read in the codex, which would take you hours to read. I assure you, however, that reading all of it is worth it.
The party members are all unique characters, and well-written. Some would say a few are weaker than others as far as being interesting (looking at you, Sten), but they all have decent backstories and are really fun to hear banter between each other. That's another thing; the party banter is hilarious and worth stopping to listen to.
The combat in this game is beyond thrilling. You can pause combat at any time to issue orders to your four-member party, and after unpausing they will act out the order. You can play the game either in third-person or an isometric view. I prefer the isometric for tactical reasons and for that classic Baldur's Gate/Planescape feel. You can also set up tactics for your party members so that they will use certain items/abilities when a condition is met. This can get as in-depth as you like, and its one of the coolest features of the game in my humble opinion.
Graphically, the game doesn't look too bad for how old it is already, but there are texture mods to spice it up, if you're interested. Be aware, however, that this could cause stuterring due to the game engine not really liking textures being TOO large. Otherwise, the graphics are servicable, but nothing to write home about. I don't really care about them, but its up to you to decide whether or not they bother you.
tl;dr Dragon Age: Origins is a return to form for Bioware RPGs and a great 100-or-so-hour romp for RPG nerds like myself. Buy it if you want to experience one of the better games to come out in recent years. Its worth it. Good story, good characters, great game.
