Oh wow, where should I start? Well first of all this is the third time I've owned the game, first on the Xbox 360, then again on the PS3, and finally on the PC. Now this game is dated, it came out in 2009, and you can really see it when you play it. Even cranking the graphics up to max on your pc won't do much to improve the apperance of the game. However there are quite a few mods out there that tweak the appearance of the game, making it signficantly more pleasant, however I have not seen any total overhaul mod out there. Do note that there is no Steam workshop for this game, but Nexus does include the Nexus Mod Manager, and has a very large selection of mods available for this game, so definitely check them out once you buy, and install this beast.
Now for the meat of things, Dragon Age Origins is the first game in the trilogy, and takes place in Ferelden, the fictional nation inspired largely by medieval England, as the on set of the Fifth Blight encroaches the land. I do not want to spoil anything, so I'll avoid talking any more about the story, but I feel that at this point in time almost everyone has played this game or at least wikia'd the plot. This game features the point and click style combat, as in I left click over my oponet and he begins to swing his sword, then I can press one of my hotkeyes for him to use a skill. Do not come in expecting this to be like DA II or DAI, where you'll be spamming the attack button like a game of Dynasty Warriors. Fortunately you have regenerating health outside of combat, and mages have a healing branch, something that Bioware took out of DAI, which drove me insane, especially on Hard and Nightmare difficulties. In this game you'll often find yourself pausing combat so you can survey the battlefield, formulate a plan, and then issue orders, then unpause to watch your four man/woman team move out.
Now I would definitely recommend playing this game on hard at least, to get a real challenge out of things, it definitely makes the game more enjoyable, and I practically live in pause mode/tactical mode. The mechanics here are amazing, as you travel from area to area, you have a slight ability to explore each of these areas. Now this is not a free roaming game, well not in the traditional sense at least. You can control to which 'area' you want to go to, and within each area there is a small degree of exploration involved, but to me that was never important, seeing as how I was so engrossed by the story. There's plenty of NPC's to talk to, a fair amount of side quests to do, and so much ♥♥♥♥ to pick up it isn't even remotely funny.
The Ultimate Edition also comes with all the DLC you could ever want, and the game has for that matter. So you definitely get your money's worth, especially with the story expansion Awakening installed that (can) continue your journey after the completition of Origins. Not to mention you have all of the smaller story/mission DLC's to play, that will take up a few hours of your time, answer some of your questions or give you some closure in some of them, as well as net you new items for your main game. Oh yeah I forgot about the prologue story for Leliana, entitled Leliana's Song, which takes place before Origins, lets you play as Leliana, and also gets you some cool items to use in Origins (especially for Leliana!).
This game is amazing, it has so much content, gameplay is fantastic, the story will keep you hooked and playing until the sun comes back up, and you'll know why this game is the best of the trilogy. Plus you'll establish such unhealthy connections with some of the characters you might end up getting a body pillo...uh you'll just try to learn everything about them. Also the game gets better with mods, they're like swear words and spices, it makes things better. Plus it'll help clean up the appearance of the game a little bit. Personally I love this game, it's in my top 5 games of all times, and it's better then those other two, and it has a better ending than Mass Effect 3. This game is a 10/10, you wont find a better game with as much content for this price with access to thousands of mods that make it even better. Plus it has a story better then the entire Elder Scrolls universe.
Even Commander Shepard would tell you that this is his favorite game on all of Steam, I mean at least believe him, he is the first human SPECTRE, savior of the galaxy, human icon, and an all around great guy.
