Ok, so from what I've seen from screen shots and old gameplay videos CONDEMNED: CRIMINAL ORIGINS has pretty decent graphics even for today. However, I installed it on a laptop with an i7 4700 HQ and GTX 860 4GB and the result was a choppy slur. This game was created around 2000 so my only thought is that maybe my hardware may be too new and that the game wasn't optimized to use it. After dialing back the lighting effects I was able to get it to a playable level at the sacrifice of some precious eye candy.
Level design is on par with similar heavy hitting titles of the time such as fear and should sport graphics good enough to put up a decent fight with them. The story on the otherhand is... well lackluster. The game centers around a detective investigating a series of serial murders. That alone makes sense, but behind this the game is constantly putting emphasis on an occult background causing all of the madness. Don't hold your breath though, the game continually sends you on erands to advance and finish the serial killer plot but will never stop to explain the so called "event" behind it all. The closest you will get to understanding it will be in a final boss battle which... to be honest... doesn't get your heart pumping like any good fight should.
The mechanics of the game were pretty good and the AI did a fantastic job. Enemies would fight you, run away, then wait behind a wall for you to walk into just like a player would have done to the game. The game also has its fair share of jump scares aswell as an incredibly tension filled final location on par with that of DOOM 3 (You'll understand if you get there).
CONDEMNED: CRIMINAL ORIGINS took me exactly the length that will show up at the top of this review for my gameplay hours due to the fact that there is nill a reason to replay the game. Sure there are hidden objects in each level that unlock achievments, but those achievments don't unlock secrets nor do they link to actual achievments on steam.
Overall the game wasn't bad for a boring night with nothing to do. If you see it on sale for 2 or 3 dollars it is definitely something to look into.
My Final Score:
[Mehh...Good, but better for time travelers from 2001 that want to get this game cheaper than when it first came out.]
