Any way for 5.1 surround?
I have an ASUS Xonar Phoebus sound card, and this game uses EAX... there is a program "enhancement" that emulates EAX, just like ALchemy does for Creative cards, called GX3.0. Unfortunately it makes the game crash when I start it. I tried playing it without it, but I have my entire room tailored to get the best possible gaming experience, and when someone in the game is in front of me talking, and I pass by them, it is very disconnecting to hear it on my front left rather than my rear left, as if they were behind me.
I looked for the last few hours, but there don't seem to be a lot of people that fall into both categories of playing this game and having a 5.1 system on something other than a creative or realtek card.

Does anyone know of any other ways to force EAX? Or anything I can do really lol.
I want to play this game, as I got it a while ago on the advice of a friend, but one of the biggest reasons he recommended it was because of how great the audio effects are.

Yes, I have a xonar D1 and have been having similar problems. At first I thought 5.1 was working with both HW and EAX2.0 options ingame turned off but I'm now not so sure. It didn't seem to be in surround sound just now. I've also noticed some sounds and audio during cut scenese doesn't seem to be working as well...but when I then enable HW or EAX2.0 option it then works...until the next time there is a cut scene and then disabling the options makes the sound come back. Really wierd. I remember having sound issues with a recent playthrough of FEAR I did which uses the same Engine.

Yeah, the GX3.0 "feature" is horrid. It crashes every game I try to run it with, so I don't even know if it would work properly.

I was searching the FEAR threads about 5.1 support with Xonar cards and came across this one that discusses changing the sound bitrate as a partial solution for the issues with FEAR's sounds cutting in and out.

I changed the sample rate in the Xonar D1 Audio Center from PCM 96KHz to PCM 48 KHz as well as making sure the GX emulation button was selected. Launched Condemned. set the HW and EAX2.0 options and reloaded the beginning of the library level. Immedietly I was able to hear the cut scene audio and it sounds like surround is working as I heard the womans voice behind me when turning around to test. Anyway, try it and see if it works for you.

The settings I used are shown in the below image.

Thank you SO MUCH!! I can finally play this game!!! I never thought that it could be my sample rate. I have mine set to 24-bit 88.2khz. I work in professional audio, so I use my computer for a lot of audio related projects, and so I automatically set it for a higher-than-normal rate.

Damm man, I can't thank you enough. Now this will work for FEAR as well!! I am literally overjoyed lol.

No problem, glad it worked for you as well!

If your going to play FEAR, you may find some of this usefull. The SDK is alot to take in but if you use the executible from the SDK you gain access to the console in-game. As well as Developer Mode commands.

By the way, in that last post you said "Criminal Minds" when you meant to say "Criminal Origins" lol

Thanks for the link, I will definitely use this. I LOVE both FEAR and FEAR2. I never played the expansions though... don't know why. I have both of them too.
