Terrible framerate

Does anyone else have terrible performance issues with this?
When I tried to play at my display's native resolution (1280x1024), the game slowed down to a crawl. It even acknowledged it with a message recommending a smaller resolution.

Granted, my PC is a laptop, but with a rather good radeon GFX card. It can run Skyrim, FFS. A game so simple should not have any problem running at standard resolution, there is hardly anything on screen and the level of detail is not exactly exceptional. Anyway, resolution should be rather irrelevant for performance nowadays, and should certainly not have such an impact at 1280x1024.

I get that. Sometimes it lags briefly. Sometimes it slows to a crawl. Sometimes you're clicking away on a button for seconds before it responds.

The more I play, the more it lags. Can't be me video card (Brand new expensive one). Got a 4 core + 4GB of RAM.

Then it lags to the points it asks to lower my frame rate to 1024x768 (which I'm already in).

Then it lags even more.

Then it crashes.
