SOLVED: Game does not 'start' after options launcher, even if application runs in the backround (app already running error, bug, cannot play)
I am posting this discussion only to save time for people who, like me, will face the problem described on the title. I don't believe I will return to that post in the future, so sorry for not ansuering any questions :-/ ...
I wasted sometime on altering the config.xml files located on uses/documents and also in the STEAM game files (2 identical config files on my STEAM installation folders + one file on user/documents standard windows folder), just like many post proposes for similar problems.
But, there was no success there.
The solution was to use again the origina config.xml files I had backuped before starting the modifications, and to select "no introduction videos" option on the lowncer.
I got the idea from post #12-08-2010, 02:04 AM on this thread:
With standard first-intall settings and no intro videos, I got atlast the game main screen :-)

Have a good game ppl :-)

Additinal info:

The game folder ander STEAM includes an installer for the ffdshow.htm programm supposently needed to see the introduction videos. (installer is ffdshow_rev3800_20110328.exe into \STEAM\SteamApps\common\Grotesque Tactics)

After running this installer, the intro selection still 'blocks' the game... :-(

For peopel that might not know it:
The application of the game does start, but it never 'reaches to our screen'... So trying to run the game again results in the 'app already running' message from STEAM lowncher. No need to restart the computer each time... By opening the windows task manager (by defount by pressing ctl+alt+delete), we can find the big list of the 'Processes' tab. There is one process reading 'GrotesqueTactics.exe'. By selecting it we can use the 'End Process' button of the Task Manager to terminate it. The game will now lounch to the setting s screen as it did the first time we opened the computer.

i just hit escape and it starts everytime, even though it seems not to. If this is not a solution to your problem then sorry for butting in.

Thanks for the feedback/proposition Basil :-). I will try Esc if I encounter the problem in the furure, or in Grotesque Tactics 2.
Have a good game !

Just to confirm that the 'Escape' trick worked for me. I assume it's related to the intro sequence problem. Thanks Basil III.

Thanks. That's a no-install and a no-buy for me then, as installing the FFDShow video codec generally does more harm than good.

FFDShow messes up video playback in a lot of games and used to even crash the preview pane in Windows Explorer. You need to set up either a whitelist or a blacklist to ensure only the programs you really, really want to, will get to see and work with FFDShow. Ridiculous amount of hassle.

Moreover, it seems this game tries to install a terribly out of date build of FFDShow dated March 2011. Wonder if the developer will ever update that[sourceforge.net].

(Also, if the entire game is reliant specifically on FDDShow to render cutscenes, then that makes for a fairly strong binding between the game and the FFDShow codec. In those cases the GPL license under which FFDShow is distributed might require that the game itself would also be made available under GPL. I hope the developer actually thought that one through and made sure all legal bases are covered.)
